In post war Britiain a new writing style emerged from the bleak times. It was commonly known as "kitchen sink drama". That sounds a little disrespectful now, perhaps, but these stories brought realism and raw emotion to their readers. David Storey's This Sporting Life, set in the industrial north, brilliantly conveys 21-year-old steelworker Arthur Machin's love of his rugby league, his success on the field, and his feelings towards his widowed landlady, as well as his bouts of doubt and anxiety. Stephen McGann perfectly captures the mood and the character in his reading. Language: English. Narrator: Stephen McGann. The hottest, sexiest, most hilariously fun opposites-attract story I’ve ever read! (USA Today bestselling author Samanthe Beck) This is a test. A test of every life decision Lisa Michaels has ever made. Lisa thought she’d gotten everything right: The nicest condo, the right career, the best hair, and a perfectly adequate sex life with her stockbroker fiancé. But when the fiancé ditches her at the altar, Lisa’s left questioning every decision she’s ever made. What if her instincts have been steering her wrong all along? And what if she tested that theory by spending one month doing the exact opposite of what she’d normally do? A crazy-hot fling with a tattooed steelworker from the wrong side of the tracks seems like a good starting point.... Each book in the The List series is standalone. ungekürzt. Language: English. George Purse is an ex-steelworker employed as a gamekeeper on a ducal country estate. He gathers, hand-rears and treasures the birds to be shot at by his wealthy employers. He must ensure that the Duke and his guests have good hunts when the shooting season comes round on the Glorious Twelfth; he must ensure that the poachers who sneak onto the land in search of food do not.Season by season, over the course of a year, George makes his rounds. He is not a romantic hero. He is a labourer, who knows the natural world well and sees it without sentimentality.Rightly acclaimed as a masterpiece of nature writing as well as a radical statement on work and class, The Gamekeeper was also, like Hines's A Kestrel for a Knave (Kes), adapted by Hines and filmed by Ken Loach, and it too stands as a haunting classic of twentieth-century fiction.

Told with warmth and humour, The Ever Open Door is the story of a hard working, down-to-earth community in a small Yorkshire town during the Second World War and its aftermath.Burly steelworker Jim Butler and his wife Sally are quite content in their little house on Potters Row. Jim's only complaint is that Sally is too soft hearted for her own good, always at the beck and call of any neighbour, friend or even stranger. Sally, on the other hand, accuses Jim of being a soft touch for anyone after a drink or two at the Rising Sun. Both accept that neither will ever change and they love each other and their daughter Daisy deeply.Theirs is a close-knit family in a close-knit community where gossip - both good and bad - abounds and neighbour looks out for neighbour and friend for friend. And when Sally's generosity leads to an inheritance it should mean a change of life for the better, instead it brings danger and difficult choices for them all... ungekürzt. Language: English. Audie Award Finalist, History, 2014 Among the runners of C. C. Pyle's First Annual International Transcontinental Foot Race were an assortment of underdogs, including 20-year-old Oklahoman and part Cherokee Andy Payne, who wanted to win over the girl of his dreams and pay off the mortgage on his family's farm; Paul "Hardrock" Simpson, who was in over his head but couldn't let down his North Carolina hometown; Mike Kelly, a luckless boxer from Indiana; Seattle's Ed Gardner, one of four black runners who encountered bigotry; Charles Hart, a 63-year-old Englishman hoping his best days weren't behind him; and Frank Johnson, a middle-aged husband, father, and steelworker from St. Louis who broke away from his humdrum life and dared to do something different. Newspaper and magazine journalist Geoff Williams details this historic event and the colorful cast of characters involved, based on firsthand accounts of those who were there and interviews from many living descendants. C. C. Pyle's Amazing Foot Race is a classic American story so astonishing and surreal that you have to hear it to believe it. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Robertson Dean. Mary Regina’s Nursing Home is a substantive 10-hour journalistic novel hybrid with content assembled over five years of research by a retired former journalist and certified internal auditor, William J. Beerman, Sr. The factual material collected during the research is wrapped in a human-interest story about William's Catholic German-American family during the post-World War II years in Pittsburgh, PA, and his mother's 13-year divorce war with his father, a steelworker. The book includes 2018 status reporting on state attorney general investigations and lawsuits encompassing 65 nursing homes and more than 1 million patient-days of nursing home care. The book is named after William’s mother, Mary Regina, who died after a short stay in a nursing home. After Mary Regina’s death, William filed suit over the mistreatment his mother had suffered, and he began looking into how the government oversees nursing homes. What he found out was alarming. This book presents in an accessible, memoir-like framework, a three-part narrative: (1) the human-interest background story of Mary Regina and William, (2) details of Mary Regina’s hospital and nursing home experiences, and (3) what William found out about government oversight of nursing homes. William’s well-documented complaints about his mother’s nursing home to the state department of health (DOH) were not handled satisfactorily. As a former auditor, he knew the methodology that the DOH used to investigate the complaints was doomed to fail. The year-to-year statistics on the DOH's performance bore this out. After researching his mother’s case, William realized that hundreds of thousands of others had filed complaints about nursing homes. He decided to broaden out his research from his mother’s case study. This book gives a voice to thousands of families and patients who have experienced neglect and abuse while in a nursing home. ungekürzt.
