Long Division contains two interwoven stories. In the first, it's 2013: After an on-stage meltdown during a nationally televised quiz contest, fourteen-year-old Citoyen "City" Coldson becomes an overnight YouTube celebrity. The next day, he's sent to stay with his grandmother in the small coastal community of Melahatchie, where a young girl named Baize Shephard has recently disappeared. Before leaving, City is given a strange book without an author called Long Division. He learns that one of the book's main characters is also named City Coldson - but Long Division is set in 1985. This 1985 City, along with his friend and love-object, Shalaya Crump, discovers a way to travel into the future and steals a laptop and cell phone from an orphaned teenage rapper called…Baize Shephard. They ultimately take these with them all the way back to 1964, to help another time-traveler they meet protect his family from the Klan. City's two stories ultimately converge in the mysterious work shed behind his grandmother's, where he discovers the key to Baize's disappearance. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Crisden. From the baseball playgrounds of Little League in the conservative 50s, through the Summer of Love and the radical 60s, to the last days of the Vietnam War, Luck of the Draw is the story of four idealistic boomers coming of age while looking for love and trying to change the world. Theirs is the story of what it was like to be young during that turbulent time of Cold War paranoia, political assassinations, the fight for civil rights, counter-culture hippies, the sexual revolution, women's liberation, military conscription, televised war, massive anti-war protests, and of course, sex and drugs and the greatest rock 'n' roll. Luck of the Draw is a companion novel to The Energy Caper, or Nixon in the Sky with Diamonds, in which the same characters live and love in an alternate universe where there was no Vietnam War, the Kennedys and Martin Luther King were not killed, and find themselves helping a "good" Richard Nixon in his fight to make America energy independent. ungekürzt. A chronicle of life on the resplendent island. Adele Barker and her son, Noah, settled into the central highlands of Sri Lanka for an 18-month sojourn, immersing themselves in the customs, cultures, and landscapes of the island: its elephants, birds, and monkeys; its hot curries and sweet mangoes; the cacophony of its markets; the resonant evening chants from its temples. They hear stories of the island's colorful past and its 25-year civil war between the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil Tigers. When, having returned home to Tucson, Barker awakes on December 26, 2004, to see televised images of the island's southern shore disappearing into the ocean, she decides she must go back. Traveling from the southernmost coasts to the farthest outposts of the Tamil north, she witnesses the ravages of the tsunami that killed 48,000 Sri Lankans in the space of 20 minutes, and reports from the ground on the triumphs and failures of relief efforts. Combining the immediacy of memoir and the vividness of travelogue with the insight of the best reportage, Not Quite Paradise chronicles life in a place few have ever visited. The book is published by Beacon Press. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Adele Barker. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/redw/000130/bk_redw_000130_sample.mp3. Zombies. The fae realm is overrun with zombies. Against all odds, I mastered the magic gifted to me by the gods and won the Faerie Games - a twisted, televised game to the death. After winning the Games, I was supposed to be free to return home to Earth. But that was a lie. Now a deadly plague is rampaging the realm. The Otherworld is dying, and I might have the power to save it. For reasons I don’t understand, he’s been working behind my back with the Empress of the Otherworld this entire time. The only person I can trust is myself. So it’s time to step into my role as the Queen of Wands and beat the fae at their own game - or die trying. Get ready for a magical, twist-filled, roller-coaster of a ride in the epic conclusion to the Faerie Games series - The Faerie Plague! ungekürzt. For decades, Walter Cronkite was known as "the most trusted man in America". Yet this very public figure was a remarkably private man. Drawing on unprecedented access to Cronkite's private papers as well as interviews with his family and friends, Douglas Brinkley now brings this American icon into focus as never before. Brinkley traces Cronkite's story from his roots in Missouri and Texas through the Great Depression, during which he began his career, to World War II, when he gained notice reporting with Allied troops from North Africa, D-Day, and the Battle of the Bulge. In 1950, Edward R. Murrow recruited him to work for CBS, where he covered presidential elections, the space program, Vietnam, and the first televised broadcasts of the Olympic Games. Cronkite was also witness to many of the most profound moments in modern American history, including the Kennedy assassination, Apollos 11 and 13, Watergate, the Vietnam War, and the Iran hostage crisis. Epic, intimate, and masterfully written, Cronkite is the much-anticipated biography of an extraordinary American life, told by one of our most brilliant and respected historians. Language: English. The story that became Dalek on TV. Although the televised episode in 2005 (starring Christopher Eccleston) ended up being very different in many important ways, this is the core of the idea that Russell T Davies wanted writer Rob Shearman to develop. Find out how it all started.... Hurrah! The deadly Daleks are back! Yes, those loveable tinpot tyrants have another plan to invade our world. Maybe this time because they want to drill to the Earth's core. Or maybe because they just feel like it. And when those pesky pepperpots are in town, there is one thing you can be sure of. There will be nonstop, high-octane mayhem in store. And plenty of exterminations! But never fear. The Doctor is on hand to sort them out. Defender of the Earth, saviour of us all. With his beautiful assistant, Evelyn Smythe, by his side, he will fight once again to uphold the beliefs of the English Empire. All hail the glorious English Empire!
