A Tale of Two Cities , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 881min
Charles Dickens, novelist philosopher and advocate of "the people", is without doubt, a giant in the world of literature. Arguably Dicken's best novel, A Tale of Two Cities (1859) is set in Paris and London, firmly placed in the period leading up to and including the French Revolution to the subsequent Reign of Terror. It's primarily the tale of Doctor Alexandre Manette, who is unjustly imprisoned in the Bastille for 18 years; his daughter, Lucie Manette, who believes him to be dead; two men who both fall in love with her; and the supporters or foes of the family who, for their own reasons, love or despise them. The novel is equally a love story, a social commentary, and an observation of the human condition. It deals with themes including family, love, revenge, politics, moral perspective, suffering, and redemption. A Tale of Two Cities is epic in it's overall vision, yet intimate and observant in its portrayal of the minute detail of the lives and feelings of the people Dickens visualizes.Dickens writes with heart and humanity. Always sensitive and thoughtful, yet his writing style is often rooted in satire and is frequently darkly humorous. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Chris MacDonnell. In this James-Bond-meets-real-world thriller, MI5 man Lucas Norton once again finds himself caught up in a high-stakes assault when a sniper in a powerboat takes a pot-shot at his family. Could it be linked to the daring raid carried out at GCHQ, where thieves evade the world's tightest security to steal top secret ultra-high-tech equipment from under his nose? Lucas's first case culminated in him, and the FBI, losing $48m from an international heist. Now he and his crack team over at GCHQ have only a few days to figure out what the stolen tech can do and where the thieves have gone. It's a search that takes them from London's secret underground railway to a disused WW2 bunker, the FBI's Black Hawk launch bay, the US Embassy and the very heart of MI5. Can Lucas's team stop a brilliantly executed plot to hold the populations of London and New York to ransom? Credence will have you trying to outsmart the world's most advanced intelligence services -- and the criminals who are one step ahead of them. ungekürzt. Language: English. Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of An Empire , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1056min
This is the story of the greatest empire the world has ever known. Simon Baker charts the rise and fall of the world's first superpower, focusing on six momentous turning points that shaped Roman history. Welcome to Rome as you've never seen it before - awesome and splendid, gritty and squalid. From the conquest of the Mediterranean beginning in the third century BC to the destruction of the Roman Empire at the hands of barbarian invaders some seven centuries later, we discover the most critical episodes in Roman history: the spectacular collapse of the "free" republic, the birth of the age of the "Caesars", the violent suppression of the strongest rebellion against Roman power, and the bloody civil war that launched Christianity as a world religion. At the heart of this account are the dynamic, complex, and flawed characters of some of the most powerful rulers in history: men such as Pompey the Great, Julius Caesar, Augustus, Nero, and Constantine. Putting flesh on the bones of these distant, legendary figures, Baker looks beyond the dusty, toga-clad caricatures and explores their real motivations and ambitions. ungekürzt. Language: English. Fort Laramie, Vol. 1, Hörbuch, Digital, 354min
Fort Laramie was an adult-oriented Western radio series that aired Sunday afternoons on the CBS radio network in 1956. Produced and directed by Gunsmoke's Norman Macdonnell, this realistic Western drama depicted life at Fort Laramie, an important stop on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails as well as a staging point for various military excursions during the 19th century. In 1849 the fort was taken over by the United States Army to protect the many wagon trains of migrant travelers on the trail. The fort was located across the North Platte River from the town of Laramie, at the mouth of the Laramie River, in Wyoming Territory. The radio series starred Raymond Burr as Lee Quince, captain of the cavalry. Regulars included Vic Perrin, Harry Bartell, Jack Moyles, Howard McNear, Sam Edwards, John Dehner, John McIntire, Virginia Gregg, James Nusser, Parley Baer, and Barney Phillips. Most of the scripts were written by John Meston, Kathleen Hite, Les Crutchfield, and John Dunkel. Amerigo Marino supplied the music. These 12 exciting episodes aired in February and April 1956 and include: "Squaw Man", "The Woman at Horse Creek", "Boredom", "The Captain's Widow", "The Shavetail", "Hattie Pelfrey", "The Beasley Girls", "The Coward", "The Lost Child", "Stage Coach Stop", "The New Recruit", and "Capture".
