One of Shakespeare's most often quoted lines, from Hamlet, simply asserts that "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in our philosophy." The current retrospective at Tate Britain of the art of Richard Long, the first in London since the Arts Council's Hayward Gallery show in 1991, has been titled Heaven and Earth by Long himself, a phrase he had earlier used for specific works of art. The phrase, implying complementary opposites, has been suggested by the I Ching, that ancient Chinese text which for millennia has guided explorations of change and stability, order and chaos, the seemingly random and the discovery of pattern. The sophisticated yet simple concepts behind the I Ching may well be an inspiration for three of the largest works on view: the great wall painting in Vallauris clay and the first room with its two huge wall paintings in River Avon mud, exploiting almost endless variations in density of tone and hue, dominated by light and dark ochres and browns so dark as to be almost black, shaped by the primordial forms of cross and line. The tidal Avon is Long's home river; he was born in Bristol, where he still lives, in 1945. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dana Brewer Harris. You will love this fascinating and exceptionally well-taught course. What really happened at the Council of Trent? After Luther, Calvin, and Henry VIII, the Council of Trent is one of the most frequently invoked names regarding the Reformation. Even so, few know much about it. As renowned historian Fr. John O'Malley demonstrates, the reality of Trent differs radically from how you probably conceive of it. In this 12-lecture course, you will discover the council's wide-reaching cultural and religious influence over the centuries. This Council profoundly impacted the Catholic Church, and its decisions had repercussions throughout Europe. You'll find this a great course whether you are interested in history, theology, or Catholic doctrine. The leading political figures were deeply involved, as were the five popes who reigned during the fateful 18 years over which it stretched. Lurching from one crisis to the next, they all had something at stake in the Council. Despite these political maneuvers, the Council professedly concerned itself with religion, especially Catholic doctrine and reform. The dramatic debate surrounding reform resulted in decrees that have had a lasting impact on the Church. The story of the Council continues long after its implementation: indeed, historians deem the 400 years following Trent the "Tridentine Era". As you will discover, the legacy of this landmark Council is vital to an understanding of the Church today. Language: English. Narrator: John W. O'Malley. In a surreal turn-of-the-century London, Gabriel Syme, a poet, is recruited to a secret anti-anarchist taskforce at Scotland Yard. Lucian Gregory, an anarchist poet, is the only poet in Saffron Park, until he loses his temper in an argument over the purpose of poetry with Gabriel Syme, who takes the opposite view. After some time, the frustrated Gregory finds Syme and leads him to a local anarchist meeting-place to prove that he is a true anarchist. Instead of the anarchist Gregory getting elected, the officer Syme uses his wits and is elected as the local representative to the worldwide Central Council of Anarchists. The Council consists of seven men, each using the name of a day of the week as a code name; Syme is given the name of Thursday. In his efforts to thwart the council's intentions, however, he discovers that five of the other six members are also undercover detectives; each was just as mysteriously employed and assigned to defeat the Council of Days. They all soon find out that they are fighting each other and not real anarchists; such was the mastermind plan of the genius Sunday. In a dizzying and surreal conclusion, the six champions of order and former anarchist ring-leaders chase down the disturbing and whimsical Sunday, the man who calls himself "The Peace of God".
