Berlin
Best of 2018 nods from the Washington Post, New York Public Library, Globe and Mail, the Guardian, and more! "The magic in Berlin is in the way Lutes conjures, out of old newspapers and photographs, a city so remote from him in time and space... [Berlin has] an ending so electrifying that I gasped."-New York Times Book Review During the past two decades, Jason Lutes has quietly created one of the masterworks of the graphic novel golden age. Berlin is one of the high-water marks of the medium: rich in its well-researched historical detail, compassionate in its character studies, and as timely as ever in its depiction of a society slowly awakening to the stranglehold of fascism. Berlin is an intricate look at the fall of the Weimar Republic through the eyes of its citizens-Marthe Müller, a young woman escaping the memory of a brother killed in World War I, Kurt Severing, an idealistic journalist losing faith in the printed word as fascism and extremism take hold; the Brauns, a family torn apart by poverty and politics. Lutes weaves these characters' lives into the larger fabric of a city slowly ripping apart. The city itself is the central protagonist in this historical fiction. Lavish salons, crumbling sidewalks, dusty attics, and train stations: all these places come alive in Lutes' masterful hand. Weimar Berlin was the world's metropolis, where intellectualism, creativity, and sensuous liberal values thrived, and Lutes maps its tragic, inevitable decline. Devastatingly relevant and beautifully told, Berlin is one of the great epics of the comics medium.- Shop: buecher

Nakamura Reality , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 501min
Absenting himself for a brief intimacy with a former girlfriend, Hugh Mcpherson leaves his surfing-obsessed sons on an isolated California beach. When he returns, the 11-year-old twins have vanished. A ferocious riptide has swept Takumi and Hitoshi out to sea, their bodies unrecovered. Devastated by the loss, Hugh and his Japanese wife, Setsuko, divorce. Severing all ties to America, Setsuko returns to Japan to live with her father, Kazuki Ono, a prominent author of mind-bending novels. After grieving for 10 years and longing for Setsuko, Hugh swims out to sea to drown himself. As he sinks, his sons appear to him, holding the last letter that he sent to their mother, begging her forgiveness. Abandoning his suicide, Hugh swims back to shore. The incident awakens memories that throw doubt on the accepted version of his sons' deaths. His doubts are intensified when he learns that Kazuki Ono has come to California to finish a novel called Fingal's Cave, the tale of a brash American who marries a Japanese woman against the wishes of her father, a powerful businessman with ties to the yakuza. Provoked by his memories and by obliquely revealing passages found in Kazuki's books, Hugh begins a quixotic journey across the California landscape, encountering numerous characters of ill will and cross-purpose who inexorably lead him toward a film-industry firm called Nakamura Reality - and a labyrinth that challenges him to separate reality from fiction to find his way out...and perhaps back to his sons. To understand Japanese culture requires reading between the lines. This is Hugh Mcpherson's challenge in Nakamura Reality, a beguiling blend of mystery, odyssey, inconsolable loss, and obsession. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Feodor Chin. Silent Hearts , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 663min
For fans of A Thousand Splendid Suns comes a stirring novel set in Afghanistan about two women - an American aid worker and her local interpreter - who form an unexpected friendship despite their utterly different life experiences and the ever-increasing violence that surrounds them in Kabul. In 2001, Kabul is suddenly a place of possibility as people fling off years of repressive Taliban rule. This hopeful chaos brings together American aid worker Liv Stoellner and Farida Basra, an educated Pakistani woman still adjusting to her arranged marriage to Gul, the son of an Afghan strongman whose family spent years of exile in Pakistan before returning to Kabul. Both Liv and her husband take positions at an NGO that helps Afghan women recover from the Taliban years. They see the move as a reboot - Martin for his moribund academic career, Liv for their marriage. But for Farida and Gul, the move to Kabul is fraught, severing all ties with Farida’s family and her former world, and forcing Gul to confront a chapter in his life he’d desperately tried to erase. The two women, brought together by Farida’s work as an interpreter, form a nascent friendship based on their growing mutual love for Afghanistan, though Liv remains unaware that Farida is reporting information about the Americans’ activities to Gul’s family, who have ties to the black market. As the bond between Farida and Liv deepens, war-scarred Kabul acts in different ways upon them, as well as their husbands. Silent Hearts is an absorbing, complex portrayal of two very different but equally resilient women caught in the conflict of a war that will test them in ways they never imagined. ungekürzt. Back in the Fight: The Explosive Memoir of a Special Operator Who Never Gave Up , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 550min
On October 3, 2005, Kapacziewski and his soldiers were coming to the end of their tour in Northern Iraq when their convoy was attacked by enemy fighters. A grenade fell through the gunner’s hatch and exploded, shattering Kapacziewski’s right leg below the knee, damaging his right hip, and severing a nerve and artery in his right arm. He endured more than forty surgeries, but his right leg still wasn’t healing as he had hoped, so in March 2007, Kapacziewski chose to have it amputated with one goal in mind: to return to the line and serve alongside his fellow Rangers. One year after his surgery, Kapacziewski accomplished his goal: he was put back on the line, as a squad leader of his Army Ranger Regiment. On April 19, 2010, during his ninth combat deployment (and fifth after losing his leg), Kapacziewski’s patrol ran into an ambush outside a village in eastern Afghanistan. After a fellow Ranger fell to withering enemy fire, shot through the belly, Sergeant Kap and another soldier dragged him seventy-five yards to safety and administered first aid that saved his life while heavy machineguns tried to kill them. His actions earned him an Army Commendation Medal with “V” for Valor. He had previously been awarded a Bronze Star for Valor—and a total of three Purple Hearts for combat wounds. Back in the Fight is an inspiring and thrilling tale listeners will never forget. The inspiring and thrilling combat memoir of the only Army Ranger serving in direct combat operations with a prosthetic limb. Includes a bonus interview with Sergeant Joseph Kapacziewski and his editor, Marc Resnick. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Johnny Heller, Jo Anna Perrin. Siege of the Witches , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 700min
It is believed that the soul of the being is captured in the heart at the moment of death. If the soul is evil, the heart should be taken, sealed and placed far away, severing any ability the entity would have to return to this earth. Sarafina was an entity such as that. A spawn of evil from the darkest side. She held her reign in the seventeen hundreds, taking the minds of the weak and innocent to build her forces. Stealing the hearts and souls of her victims to add to her power and strength. Sarafina met her end, bound to a post, set to flames and her heart taken from her. They sealed it in a box and buried it deep below the earth's surface. When they buried Sarafina's heart, they buried the evil of Sarafina. So they thought. Centuries had passed and the story of Sarafina became a folklore. Six-year old Libby Harris heard of no such folklore, nor would she care if she had. All that was on Libby's mind as she sat in her backyard was digging for buried treasure. Little did she know as her tiny hands touched upon the tin box, that she uncovered more than she ever anticipated. Curiosity caused Libby to open that box. Her curiosity unleashed the evil. And the innocence of the six-year-old girl allowed for Sarafina to enter her, take her body and possess her soul. Sarafina's dark reign returns. Only this time she releases it to an unsuspecting, unprepared modern world through the body of a small and innocent child. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bryan L. Anderson. Four Ever , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 619min
Surrounded by a group of devoted four-footed and two-winged family members, Zak and Killian have built what should have been a dream life in their countryside farmhouse. But a cruel twist of fate and the re-emergence of old demons has frayed the edges of the men’s seven-year relationship until just one wrong move could end up severing their bond for good. Seemingly content to walk on eggshells around one another, things come to a head when ER nurse Zak brings his work home with him...literally. After being forced to leave their posh Southern California lives, homeless stepbrothers Liam and Noah are slowly losing themselves to the streets they can’t seem to escape. When 21-year-old Liam is beaten up while protecting his younger “brother”, the pair find themselves being welcomed into a home where being a stray is considered a good thing. But Liam and 19-year-old Noah have learned the hard way that nothing is given for free and there’s no such thing as the kindness of strangers. Survival means only counting on and trusting in each other. Will Zak and Killian’s offer of a no-strings-attached place to heal end up being more than any of the four men bargained for? Especially when feelings between Liam and Noah begin to crawl to the surface and the truth of what Zak and Killian’s relationship has turned into becomes harder to deny? And what happens when lines begin to blur and needs start to change? Will Zak, Killian, Liam, and Noah end up going their separate ways? Meteora: The History of the Famous Greek Landmark That Houses Eastern Orthodox Monasteries , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 81min
The Tower of Babel is arguably among the most well-known allegories of the Old Testament. As told by the Book of Genesis, the story revolves around a post-flood batch of Noah's descendants who dwelled in Babylon's Mesopotamia, a city erected by King Nimrod. The population multiplied rapidly over the years, and the city's inhabitants fostered the growth of their culture and enhancing the infrastructure of their territories, made easier by the existence of only one common language. Naturally, the pride of the Mesopotamian residents burgeoned, but their contentment, poisoned by their greed and ambition, began to decline. The only way to prevail over this slump, believed a particularly enterprising group of individuals, was to construct a colossal ziggurat (a “rectangular, stepped tower”) that would ascend past the clouds and into the heavens. With this tower, they intended to “make a name for” mankind and the untouchable abilities of mere mortals, thereby severing their relationship with God, their creator, for good. According to the Bible, God was far from impressed, and to add insult to injury, the architects behind this attempt deliberately opted for man-made materials, such as brick and tar, rather than stone, timber, and other natural building blocks gifted to them by God. The overblown pomposity and conceit of his subjects had to be ceased at once, lest they stray further away from him. Thus, as the people slept, God reached down and scooped up handfuls of the slumbering Mesopotamians and strewed them across the continents, creating 70 different nations and tribes. When they awoke, the bewildered residents of the newly birthed nations were speaking in different tongues. With the architects scattered around the globe and now unable to understand one another, construction of the partially built ziggurat came screeching to a halt. It was later dubbed the “Tower of Babel”, or the “Tower of Confusion”. This miserable monument, which served as a haunting remi ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman.
