Hamlet, Hörbuch, Digital, 34min
Written in play form using Shakespeare's iambic pentameter and imitating much of his style and language, these little plays are an excellent introduction to the bard. Hamlet’s father, the king of Denmark, has died suddenly. But instead of grieving, his mother, Gertrude, has married the dead king’s brother, Claudius. One dark night Hamlet sees a ghost. It is his dead father, who claims he was murdered by Claudius, the new king. But did Hamlet really see a ghost, or did he just imagine it? And if he did see a ghost, was it telling him the truth? Hamlet plans to avenge his father by killing Claudius. However the man he stabs isn’t Claudius, as he thinks, but his girlfriend’s father. So the wrong man dies. So much tragedy, but there is more to come. Who else will die an untimely death? And who will live to tell the tale? Language: English. Narrator: Gill Tavner, full cast. Meeting of Minds, Volume IX , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 117min
Conceived and developed by Steve Allen, the award-winning PBS-TV series Meeting of the Minds brought together the most provocative figures of history for conversation and conflict. William Shakespeare is the featured guest on this installment, which breaks the pattern set in the earlier shows by surrounding the famed playwright not with other illustrious historical figures, but with the fruits of his own imagination.Following a brief and only marginally revealing discussion of his early life, Shakespeare is joined by the Dark Lady of the Sonnets, Hamlet, Romeo, Othello, and the Ghost of Hamlet's Father. Expounding on the theme of love, the most enigmatic and compelling of Shakespeare's characters challenge each other and their mutual creator to resolve long-standing controversies about their identities and inner conflicts. As they speak in the eloquent cadences of iambic pentameter, and with little respect for the discomfort of the playwright, the often unruly group continues the Meeting of Minds tradition of lively and entertaining discourse. ungekürzt. King's Games: The Commentaries , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 216min
An introduction to the original Game of Thrones: the War of the Roses. King's Games, The Commentaries," brings to life the personalities and events leading to the fall of the last Plantagenet king of England, Richard III. In a series of historical and personal essays, the playwright condenses a lifetime of study into an easily understood overview of a tumultuous period of English history, as well as the creation of the modern verse play, King's Games, A Memoir of Richard III. This is a comprehensive guide and reference resource containing three diverse types of timelines: an entertaining essay overview focused on the principal participants; military confrontations; and a year-by-year, month and day, breakdown that encapsulates significant, influencing events from 1400 A.D. to Bosworth Field. Additionally, along with describing her research, and travails, in creating two separate versions of the play, the playwright shares insightful observations of the characters of key participants involved, as well as incidental thoughts on such diverse topics as Shakespearean hatchet jobs, understanding the reading and delivery of iambic pentameter, and the always fascinating private (if not astonishingly short-sighted) peccadilloes of royalty. ungekürzt. The Odyssey (eBook, ePUB)
A New York Times Notable Book of 2018 "Wilson's language is fresh, unpretentious and lean...It is rare to find a translation that is at once so effortlessly easy to read and so rigorously considered." —Madeline Miller, author of Circe Composed at the rosy-fingered dawn of world literature almost three millennia ago, The Odyssey is a poem about violence and the aftermath of war; about wealth, poverty and power; about marriage and family; about travelers, hospitality, and the yearning for home. This fresh, authoritative translation captures the beauty of this ancient poem as well as the drama of its narrative. Its characters are unforgettable, none more so than the "complicated” hero himself, a man of many disguises, many tricks, and many moods, who emerges in this version as a more fully rounded human being than ever before. Written in iambic pentameter verse and a vivid, contemporary idiom, Emily Wilson's Odyssey sings with a voice that echoes Homer's music; matching the number of lines in the Greek original, the poem sails along at Homer's swift, smooth pace. A fascinating, informative introduction explores the Bronze Age milieu that produced the epic, the poem's major themes, the controversies about its origins, and the unparalleled scope of its impact and influence. Maps drawn especially for this volume, a pronunciation glossary, and extensive notes and summaries of each book make this is an Odyssey that will be treasured by a new generation of readers.- Shop: buecher

The Passionate Shepherd to His Love and Her Reply , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 3min
The Passionate Shepherd to His Love, known for its first line, "Come live with me and be my love," is a poem written by the English poet Christopher Marlowe and published in 1599 (six years after the poet's death). In addition to being one of the best-known love poems in the English language, it is considered one of the earliest examples of the pastoral style of British poetry in the late Renaissance period. It is composed in iambic tetrameter (four feet of unstressed/stressed syllables), with seven (sometimes six, depending on the version) stanzas each composed of two rhyming couplets. It is often used for scholastic purposes for its regular meter and rhythm. The poem was the subject of a well-known "reply" by Walter Raleigh, called "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd". The interplay between the two poems reflects the relationship that Marlowe had with Raleigh. Marlowe was young, his poetry romantic and rhythmic, and in the Passionate Shepherd he idealizes the love object (the Nymph). Raleigh was an old courtier and an accomplished poet himself. His attitude is more jaded, and, in writing "The Nymph's Reply", he rebukes Marlowe for being naive and juvenile in both his writing style and the Shepherd's thoughts about love. ungekürzt.
