The Sky Is Yours: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 938min
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF 2018 BY: Wall Street Journal • NPR • New York Public Library • LitHub • Mental Floss “Influenced by the likes of Jane Austen and Rick and Morty, Smith tackles timely issues while leaving room for some delicious reality TV references.” (Entertainment Weekly)In the burned-out, futuristic city of Empire Island, three young people navigate a crumbling metropolis constantly under threat from a pair of dragons that circle the skies. When violence strikes, reality star Duncan Humphrey Ripple V, the spoiled scion of the metropolis' last dynasty; Baroness Swan Lenore Dahlberg, his tempestuous, death-obsessed betrothed; and Abby, a feral beauty he discovered tossed out with the trash; are forced to flee everything they've ever known. As they wander toward the scalded heart of the city, they face fire, conspiracy, mayhem, unholy drugs, dragon-worshippers, and the monsters lurking inside themselves. In this bombshell of a novel, Chandler Klang Smith has imagined an unimaginable world: scathingly clever and gorgeously strange, The Sky Is Yours is at once faraway and disturbingly familiar, its singular chaos grounded in the universal realities of love, family, and the deeply human desire to survive at all costs.Praise for The Sky Is Yours:“It’s a mesmeric world, comic in the way teenage voyages of self-discovery inevitably are, but with an undertone of menace, horror, even hints of allegory. Satire, too . . . Smith’s imagination is inexhaustible. The Sky Is Yours is a great and disturbing debut, which colonizes a new realm of the magic city.” (The Wall Street Journal)“Smith’s gifts of imagination are staggering.... Much like Lev Grossman’s The Magicians and Charlie Jane Anders’s All the Birds in the Sky before it, The Sky is Yours fi ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kirsten Potter. Desert Island Discs: 70 Years of Castaways, Hörbuch, Digital, 1090min
For 70 years now Desert Island Discs has managed that rare feat - to be both enduring and relevant. By casting away the biggest names of the day in science, business, politics, showbiz, sport, and the arts, it presents a cross-sectional snapshot of the times in which we live. As the decades have passed, the programme has kept pace; never frozen in time yet always, somehow, comfortingly the same. BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs celebrates its 70 birthday in 2012. Since the programme’s deviser, Roy Plomley, interviewed comedian Vic Oliver in January 1942, nearly 3,000 distinguished people from all walks of life have been stranded on the mythical island, accompanied by only eight records, one book, and a luxury. Here the story of one of BBC Radio 4’s favourite programmes is chronicled through a special selection of castaways. Roy Plomley, inventor of the programme as well as its presenter for over 40 years, quizzes the young Cliff Richard about "these rather frenzied movements" the 1960s pop sensation makes on the stage. Robert Maxwell tells Plomley’s successor, Michael Parkinson, that "I will have left the world a slightly better place by having lived in it." Diana Mosley assures Sue Lawley that Adolf Hitler was "extraordinarily fascinating" and had mesmeric blue eyes. And Johnny Vegas tugs Kirsty Young’s heart-strings with his account of a childhood so impoverished that family pets were fair game: "My dad had always claimed that rabbits were livestock, but we’d never eaten one before." Desert Island Discs is much more than a radio programme. It is a unique and enduringly popular take on our lives and times - and this book tells in rich detail the colourful and absorbing story of an extraordinary institution. Please note: There was an issue with repeated audio in this title, this has now been fixed. Language: English. Narrator: Juliette Stevenson, Alex Jennings. Incantations
Some say the flute is one of the first instruments ever made, carved by ancient people from wood or bone. Perhaps that is why, when I play it alone, I notice that it feels inherently spiritual to me, even mystical. Perhaps the sound of my modern flute evokes the spirits of it's ancestors, the flutes of distant and ancient cultures used in ceremonies and rituals. Or maybe it's just because the sound, made with human breath, is like a supernatural human voice. In my study of modern music I have been touched by certain pieces, ones that seem to resonate more deeply than others. Here are nine of them. They are modern, but they are also spiritual. Simple or complex, lyrical or virtuosic, all share a soulful intensity and demand a heightened attention to expressive detail. When I play them I am transported to a magical, meditative place and I want listeners to travel there with me. This is spiritual modernism. It is meditative chant sung through the voice of the flute. These are my incantations. 'Miss Rudich plays very beautifully, producing a smooth, silken tone, phrasing with spirited elegance, and operating with a crucial sense of linear continuity that characterizes a polished artist.' -The New York Times 'Rachel Rudich's playing seems to exhaust the possibilities of extended techniques for the instrument.' -The Los Angeles Times '...a captivating, lively dialogue...bright, shapely birdsong...bubbling, unlabored, lovable invention...' -The New Yorker 'Rachel Rudich's flute purred, moaned, whispered and rattled through many mesmeric and sensual passages.' -The Village Voice 'Rachel Rudich is a remarkably fluent instrumentalist with a talent for involvement in first-rate music elsewhere neglected.' -Fanfare Magazine.- Shop: odax
