Miss Jane: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 551min
Astonishing prose brings to life a forgotten woman and a lost world in a strange and bittersweet Southern pastoral. Since his award-winning debut collection of stories, Last Days of the Dog-Men, Brad Watson has been expanding the literary traditions of the South, in work as melancholy, witty, strange, and lovely as any in America. Now, drawing on the story of his own great-aunt, Watson explores the life of Miss Jane Chisolm, born in rural, early-20th-century Mississippi with a genital birth defect that would stand in the way of the central "uses" for a woman in that time and place: sex and marriage. From the highly erotic world of nature around her to the hard tactile labor of farm life, from the country doctor who befriends her to the boy who loved but was forced to leave her, Miss Jane Chisolm and her world are anything but barren. The potency and implacable cruelty of nature, as well as its beauty, is a trademark of Watson's fiction. In Miss Jane, the author brings to life a hard, unromantic past that is tinged with the sadness of unattainable loves, yet shot through with a transcendent beauty. Jane Chisolm's irrepressible vitality and generous spirit give her the strength to live her life as she pleases in spite of the limitations that others, and her own body, would place on her. Free to satisfy only herself, she mesmerizes those around her, exerting an unearthly fascination that lives beyond her still. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tiffany Morgan. Power of Position
How biodiversity classification, with its ranking of species, has social and political implications as well as implications for the field of information studies. The idea that species live in nature as pure and clear-cut named individuals is a fiction, as scientists well know. According to Robert D. Montoya, classifications are powerful mechanisms and we must better attend to the machinations of power inherent in them, as well as to how the effects of this power proliferate beyond the boundaries of their original intent. We must acknowledge the many ways our classifications are implicated in environmental, ecological, and social justice work-and information specialists must play a role in updating our notions of what it means to classify. In Power of Position, Montoya shows how classifications are systems that relate one entity with other entities, requiring those who construct a system to value an entity's relative importance-by way of its position-within a system of other entities. These practices, says Montoya, are important ways of constituting and exerting power. Classification also has very real-world consequences. An animal classified as protected and endangered, for example, is protected by law. Montoya also discusses the Catalogue of Life, a new kind of composite classification that reconciles many local ("traditional") taxonomies, forming a unified taxonomic backbone structure for organizing biological data. Finally, he shows how the theories of information studies are applicable to realms far beyond those of biological classification.- Shop: buecher

Napoléon Bonaparte: How One Man's Love for His Country Gave Birth to the French Revolution , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 215min
One of the greatest military leaders that ever lived, Napoleon left behind a legacy. His work has lived on, years after his death. His Code Napoleon has formed the foundation for most of the legal and parliamentary systems across Europe and the rest of the world today. Such was the impact that Napoleon had on the world. He was the man who was able to make 36 million French citizens obey him, without exerting any authority over them, but because of his pure genius, which had seen him succeed where so many of his predecessors had failed. He was the man who managed to come out victorious in battle, when he was clearly outnumbered by his adversaries, something that so many of the most confident and bravest men on the planet would never ever have thought possible. But he, Napoleon Bonaparte, defied all odds. Other than the fact that he was known for his military exploits, Napoleon was also known for something else, love. He loved, passionately. He harbored deep love for his first wife Josephine, a love whose tale that has been told for years. Such was his undying love for Josephine, that he defied the odds, his family included, and married her, once his mistress, a woman years his senior, and a socialite with a penchant for going after men of power. But, for Napoleon, it was love, pure unadulterated love, which kept them in good terms, even after they had divorced. At the time of his death, his last words were his love for Josephine, his country France and his army, the three most important things to him. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jim D Johnston. American Legends: The Life of Little Richard , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 79min
The grass may be greener on the other side, but it's still difficult to cut. - Little Richard A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. As the present generation of rock music devotees looks back to the early days of the genre, each fan base heralds one artist or another as the founder of the movement that swept the country in the 1940s and '50s. Titles such as "King of Rock" and "Father of Rock" are spread freely among a small group of pioneers that are revered today as the greats of early rock. Buddy Holly is noted for his combination of a traditional look with a driving beat and a refreshing, simplistic American style of romantic lyrics, Elvis Presley stands alone in terms of exerting a charismatic, seductive hold over his audience, and Chuck Berry is known for his guitar innovations and appeal to teen romance and the American automobile. Within this generation came Richard Wayne Penniman, a young blues singer from Macon, Georgia affectionately known to the public as "Little Richard". Whereas Holly, Presley, and Berry were daring innovators, Penniman based his appeal on an outrageous stage personality, a catalog of special vocal effects, a barbaric set of piano techniques, and a raft of nonsensical texts bordering on gibberish, many of which had to be significantly cleaned up for public consumption. ungekürzt. The Trent Affair: The Diplomatic Incident That Nearly Brought Great Britain into the American Civil War , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 81min
Mr. Seward... is exerting himself to provoke a quarrel with all Europe, in that spirit of senseless egotism which induces the Americans, with their dwarf fleet and shapeless mass of incoherent squads which they call an army, to fancy themselves the equal of France by land and Great Britain by sea. - The London Chronicle In November 1861, the American Civil War was still a relatively young conflict, and both sides were still jockeying for the upper hand. The Confederates had won the First Battle of Bull Run in July, and there had not been any major battles in the West, but the Union had also pushed the Confederates out of West Virginia and George McClellan was about to organize the Army of the Potomac for an offensive against Richmond. Months before then, Confederate President Jefferson Davis had sent out diplomatic agents to Europe in attempts to win recognition among major European powers, and to place even further pressure on the status quo, Southern merchants actually refused to export cotton, hoping the sheer weight of economics would compel them to help. As historian Charles Hubbard pointed out, "Davis left foreign policy to others in government and, rather than developing an aggressive diplomatic effort, tended to expect events to accomplish diplomatic objectives. The new president was committed to the notion that cotton would secure recognition and legitimacy from the powers of Europe. One of the Confederacy's strongest hopes at the time was the belief that the British, fearing a devastating impact on their textile mills, would recognize the Confederate States and break the Union blockade." ungekürzt. The Selling of the American Economy: How Foreign Companies Are Remaking the American Dream , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 403min
Today, many Americans regard globalization as a significant threat to our work force, and to our very way of life. As unemployment soars, the automotive and manufacturing industries crumble, countless jobs continue to ship overseas, and the retail sector faces the worst slump in decades, cries of "Buy American" have grown louder and louder. But at a time when an Italian company has bailed out one of our most iconic automakers; a French-German consortium is closing in on a multibillion dollar military contract; companies based around the world are stocking our grocery aisles; and the assets of some of our most venerable financial institutions have been stripped down and bought up by banks from Hong Kong and London, what does "Buy American" mean any more? Is the influence that foreign companies are exerting on our economy making us more competitive in the global marketplace, or less? Creating jobs for Americans, or importing their own workforces? A threat to our national security, or are they bringing us technology that makes us safer? When they open factories here, are they siphoning money from our economy, or bolstering it? Are we selling our economy to the highest bidder?Micheline Maynard, New York Times senior business correspondent, argues that foreign investments are actually an overwhelmingly positive force, creating thousands of jobs, pumping billions of dollars into national and local economies, reinvigorating communities, fostering innovation and diversity in the marketplace, and teaching Americans new ways to live and work. In this compelling narrative, Maynard paints a fascinating portrait of the paradigm shift that is transforming the American economy - and remaking the American dream. ungekürzt. Language: English.
