Straight out of the kitchen, Making Dinner is an all-female San Francisco favorite that has been labeled indie, folk, and pop. Making Dinner takes over the stage the way the smell of cookies baking takes over a kitchen. "It was like all of the ingredients finally stirred themselves together, and, well, dinner was served!" Eva Jo reminisces. Eva Jo Meyers recorded her first full length album in 2001 in Thailand, with Bangkok-based indie punk rockers, Sepia. Making Dinner is the fourth band she's fronted. 'I've been writing songs, literally, since I was six years old, and have been in one band or another since the 7th grade'. Meyers, who writes all the band's songs, says 'We've had some incredible shows. 12 Galaxies was a fantastic start, we brought down the house and it just keeps getting better. We've got a set list of catchy songs, but what really counts is that we have this great chemistry. Our goal is to have fun, and it's contagious. Plus, Dave Morey from KFOG said we're 'not bad!'' The singer/songwriter had known cellist, Marianka Madey, since the two were in kindergarten. 'If you had told Marianka, at the age of six, that someday she'd play in a band, she would have run away shrieking. This was a girl that was the first cellist in the Empire State Youth Orchestra. She barely even knew who the Beatles were.' But play in a band she does. Katie Pilat, the band's bassist, came by way of a new year's resolution. 'I got the bass as a birthday present years ago, and then got a new job two days later and the bass ended up under the bed,' Katie recalls. 'But last year I decided it was time to play, so my resolution was to call up Eva Jo to see if she wanted to jam.' Katie and Eva Jo had met playing frisbee in Golden Gate Park. 'The first night as I arrived at Katie's I was feeling exhausted from the day, but the session was so great, I left exhilarated,' Eva admits. 'Katie has this amazing talent, she's the effervescence in a song. She makes things float'. Both Devorah Rosner (back-up vocals and persussion) and Marianka had already been playing out with Eva Jo, and were both working on her new album at Goldfinger Studios in Novato, CA. 'After we had the four of us, the only thing missing was the beat. We had a show coming up at 12 Galaxies in a few weeks, so I called up a former coworker and told her to get her drum kit out of storage. Zarah Gamaldi was on board, and we had a band! Devorah has this voice like melted butter and has been on stage her whole life, so when I told her we were ready to play, we were all pretty excited.' Katie Crouch, the newest member of Making Dinner, joined the band in July 2008 when her friend and former Making Dinner violinist Genevieve Coyle left the band to go back to school. 100% classically trained, Katie C. is plugged in for the first time and enjoying the freedom of making up her own music. 'I was excited to try a new type of violin playing,' she gushes, 'and at the first rehearsal, I felt like everything clicked.' Katie C. loves the stage and also performs locally with Symphony Parnassus.

Many of the songs you are about to hear are more than a thousand years old. For centuries, these songs have been carried on from generation to generation, preserved only by the oral tradition. Then, in the early 1990's, a Russian singer and ethnomusicologist Juliana Svetlitchnaia made it her life's mission to eternalize the sounds of her culture's past. Juliana traveled to some of the farthest outposts of Russian civilization, places accessible only by helicopter and lacking basic amenities. Yet it was places like these that gave Juliana the most authentic sampling of the fading tradition she had sought to preserve. She worked day and night, interviewing singers, listening to their songs, singing along with them-and recording it all on a simple tape recorder. Upon her return, Juliana combed through hundreds of hours of the recorded material, transcribing the lyrics and notating the songs. Driven by her passion to share these gems with the world, Juliana founded PAVA: the ensemble of Russian female folk singers. 'Pava' is the Russian word for peacock, a symbol of the beauty, strength, and grace of a Russian woman. In the years that followed PAVA's inception, Juliana has painstakingly selected every singer who has performed in the group. She believes that a PAVA singer must have two indispensible traits: a zeal for the Russian folk singing, and a voice that radiates that unmistakable effervescence of the quintessential Russian female folk singer. This album owes it's existence to Juliana's endless energy as much as to the unique singing ability and boundless enthusiasm of each PAVA member. Although PAVA is an a cappella group, some of the songs in this album are accompanied by musical instruments. These include the traditional Russian balalaika, kalyuka (overtone flute), kugikly (panpipes), and kolyosnaya lira (hurdy-gurdy), the small percussion instruments such as treshchotki (clapper), bubenchiki (jingle bells), and a washboard, and a few less commonly known instruments, such as a scythe. Although a departure from the pure a cappella singing, the use of accompaniment in this album is not surprising: hand-held musical and percussion instruments have often been used in Russian folk music to enhance the liveliness of the songs and to draw out their rhythmic patterns. In concerts, PAVA singers wear authentic Russian folk costumes, some more than 300 years old! The singers admit that this intricate attire has an almost mystical effect on them, as if moving them back into the world that bore the sounds they now hope to reproduce. The costumes are sometimes donned for rehearsals, too, and some singers insisted on wearing their costumes in the recording studio. Whether or not they did, the results speak for themselves: the superbly rendered, first-of-it's-kind collection of melodies, harmonies and lyrics that intrigue and lure us into the amazingly vibrant Russian folk singing culture! Documenta 4 by Jef Cornelis is the first title of the new "Archives" collection, which is dedicated to landmark exhibitions and curatorial practices, and which provides reference material and moving images to a growing field of research, that of curatorial studies and exhibition history. * * Held in Kassel between June and October 1968, "Documenta 4"—the last to be directed by Documenta founder Arnold Bode—was plagued by controversy and debate: artistic and political and generational and aesthetic conflicts, as well as tensions between European and American art were some of the issues that affected this edition, echoing the social and political upheavals that were taking place elsewhere at the same time. The film reflects this effervescence, giving voice to the artists, curators, and audience, but also offers a unique approach to an exhibition in progress. We can watch Sol LeWitt's constructing "Three Part Variation," Joseph Beuys installing his "Raumplastik," Martial Raysse talking about the place of the artist at Kassel, Harald Szeemann defending the concept of the museum, Edward Kienholz explaining his work from inside his "Roxy" installation, and so on. * * Jef Cornelis has mainly worked for VRT, Belgian national television in Flemish. He has realized more than 200 films, especially on architecture, literature, and the arts. * * Yves Aupetitallot is an art historian, curator, art critic, and director of Le Magasin–Centre National d'Art Contemporain, Grenoble. His essay offers essential reference points that elucidate the context and debates of this pivotal exhibition. * * Published with Le Magasin, Centre National d'Art Contemporain, Grenoble, and Argos–Center for Art and Media, Brussels. * * DVD Multizone, PAL/SECAM, 54 minutes.
