In 1969, America was still undergoing plenty of social turmoil, much of it the result of sweeping changes made via the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War, which helped spark the counterculture. Protests were prominent across the country, and one of the movements galvanized during this time was on behalf of the LGBT community, who were often subjected to discrimination in all facets of life. However, LGBT rights were naturally on the back burner for most Americans at the time, and it's safe to say few considered them until hearing about the Stonewall riots that took place at the end of June 1969 in New York City. Given the discrimination, gay people tried to meet in secret gay bars, and it was common for police to try to bust up such gatherings, but on the night of June 28, the patrons at the Stonewall Inn had enough. As the police tried to line everybody in the bar up and identify them, the crowd hanging around the place began to swell, and tensions began to rise as there were increasing calls to challenge the propriety of the police action. As people sang "We Shall Overcome" and there were chants of "Gay Power," a scuffle eventually broke out, and the police resorted to anti-riot tactics to break up the crowd, injuring an untold number with bats and other objects. The next day, there were further riots, and in the coming days, as news of what happened spread, a gay rights movement began to sprout, consisting of more peaceful protest and pickets. Eventually, the Stonewall riots became a rallying cry across the country for gay rights, and gay rights groups popped up in every state. There would be gay pride marches on the anniversary of the Stonewall riots to commemorate the event, and gay rights entered the mainstream and truly became part of the national debate. Another Dixie Band - a bunch of experienced professionals, with bandleader Robert Goodenough up front, what translates to a lot of dry humour and an answer to everyone that believes that Jazz has to be just serious. The term "Dixieland" is not been taken too earnest and there is much room for musical sidesteps or grotesque, of course with the same musical quality we're used to. Dean Martin's schmaltzy song "That´s Amore" becomes the mean "That's A Moray". And that's just the beginning: W.A. Mozart, Frank Sinatra, the Platters - nobody is safe from the Another Dixie Band. A Transportational Tragedy in One Act It is about twenty minutes since the last set ended. Most of the dust raised during the Grande Finale has settled or been washed down the throats of public-spirited, off-duty musicians. Some of them are seated at a table not far from the bandstand, peering out over the rims of empty glasses at a mountain of equipment which has to be torn down, packed up, carried out and loaded into the car. (Band members with smaller instruments have discreetly withdrawn). The car is parked two blocks away. Rain is coming down in buckets. Everyone present at the table wonders to himself if anyone is fool enough to ask The Question. Someone always is. FOOL: Are we having fun, yet? A brief scuffle ensues as the Fool is lynched. The remaining guests, believing this to be part of the show, break out in renewed applause. As calm returns, the musicians look again at the stuff on stage. They laugh hysterically, sit down and call for the waiter. Ist das ein sinnvolles Unternehmen in einer Zeit, in der Jazz mit dem Computer oder mit dem Alphorn gemacht wird, wo "Jazzprogramme" häufiger aus Tangomusik oder kaukasischem Gesang bestehen als aus Swing und Blues? Ich finde Another Dixie Band wichtig! Sie ist wichtig als Alternative zum "Zeitgeist" einerseits und zum Purismus andererseits. Another Dixie Band bedeutet Musik wider den "tierischen Ernst". Tradierte Formen werden ebenso auf die Schaufel genommen wie falsches Pathos oder "des Kaisers neue Kleider" der Siebengescheiten. Es gibt natürlich Vorbilder wie die Firehouse Five aus San Francisco oder Spike Jones, den "Carmen Mörder", doch wo kann man solch köstliche, persiflierende Musik heute noch hören? Another Dixie Band gibt es jetzt und hier: I'm Jazzclub, auf Ihrer Party (wenn Sie wollen), beim Frühschoppen und nun endlich auch in Ihrem CD-Player. Dixieland-Jazz mit Humor (einem Nebenprodukt der Intelligenz) und Virtuosität, mit Klamauk und vollendetem Können. Sich zu unterhalten oder unterhalten zu werden ist keine Schande, viel eher eine Frage des Niveaus. Another Dixie Band - noch eine Dixieband? Ich würde eher sagen: eine andere Dixieband.
