    BeloSom, the vibrant four-hand piano duo, was formed by Brazilian pianist Patricia Guadagnoli and American pianist and conductor Lee Hagon in 2012. "Belo som", meaning "beautiful sound" in Portuguese, reflects the goal of the pianists to share beautiful music from all over the world and from many different time periods, using the vast array of sounds available through the versatility of the piano. BeloSom has played much of the well-loved four-hand piano literature, including Ravel's "Mother Goose Suite", Rachmaninoff's Suite for four hands, Brahms' Hungarian Dances, Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, Liszt's "Mephisto" waltzes and Hungarian Dances for four hands, works by Poulenc and Saint-Saens, Mozart sonatas, and everything in between. While BeloSom's roots are in the classical tradition, Patricia and Lee share a passion for the music of Latin cultures. In addition to playing varied and virtuosic classical, romantic and modern four-hand piano repertoire, the duo also explores lesser known works by composers from Latin countries, particularly Argentina, Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Italy, and Cuba. Winning several competitions and scholarships, Lee graduated from Westminster summa cum laude in three years. In 2009 she earned a Masters of Music in piano performance and pedagogy from The Hartt School in Hartford, CT under the guidance of world-renowned pianist Luiz de Moura Castro. In addition to traveling through out the U.S. and in England, Italy, France, Belgium, Spain, Mexico and Portugal for performances, international piano festivals, and pedagogy conferences, Lee maintains a private studio of piano students, is an avid choral conductor, has held several music ministry positions, and is an active performer and recording artist in the BeloSom piano duo with Brazilian pianist Patricia Guadagnoli. She is currently the minister of music at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Wilbraham, MA where she also coordinates The Joy of Music concert series. She has held positions as a choral director for the Children's Chorus of Springfield, MA, Girls Inc. In Holyoke, MA and Veritas Prep Charter School in Springfield, MA. Committed to promoting social change through the gift of music, every year Lee brings together singers from all over CT and Western MA to form a community choir with orchestra and soloists to perform benefit events for those in need. Lee is excited to be starting a new position in the fall of 2013 as the director of choral activities at Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham, MA. Patricia Guadagnoli began her music studies at the age of five with her mother. While in Brazil, she won several piano competitions including first prize at the Artlivre National Piano Competition, first prize and best Brazilian music interpretation at the Honorina Barra Piano Competition, and special prize at the Magda Tagliaferro Piano Competition. In 2004 she represented Brazil for the Brazilian-Colombian music week at EAFIT University in Medellin, Colombia. In 2007 she won the Paranov Competition and performed as soloist with the Hartt Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Patricia has performed as soloist with symphonic orchestras in Brazil, and with Beth El Temple Orchestra in Connecticut, US. Patricia also won second prize at the Connecticut State Music Young Artist Competition and the Van Rooy Competition at the Hartt School of Music. She was under the guidance of professor Luis de Moura Castro, and a member of the Performance 20/20 Honors Chamber Ensemble during her Bachelor's degree at the Hartt School of Music She has performed in Brazil, Colombia, Portugal, Italy, Spain and the United States.     Monhegan Suite & Other Musical Journeys
    This CD contains three different musical journeys through time. We hope that listeners will feel they have spent that day on Monhegan Island, experienced the brief but passionate relationship of the Apache lovers and traced the evolution of the Tango over the course of a century. Monhegan Suite by John Kusiak was commissioned by Jill Dreeben to depict the moods and tones of different places on Monhegan Island in the course of a summer day. The rest of this booklet will be devoted to the thoughts of the composer. Katherine Hoover described Canyon Echoes as the story of two young Apaches from a large canyon "where the streams ripple and the wind sings in the cottonwoods." In Dance they meet and have eyes only for each other. Serenade marks the growth in their friendship. She Mourns when her young lover leaves for the hunt. When He Returns he is stricken to learn she has fallen ill and died. In Histoire du Tango, Astor Piazzolla traces the evolution of the Tango from it's origins in Buenos Aires in Bordel 1900 to Cafe 1930 then to Club 1960. Prelude - 12 Nautical Miles - This movement opens with the guitar emulating the sound of distant bell buoys that gradually come closer. An introduction leads to a dreamy anticipation of the day, the main theme with it's Lydian mode character is stated by the flute. Excitement over returning to Monhegan builds as I imagine the Laura B ferry making the 12- mile trip from Port Clyde over open sea, a trip sometimes accompanied by harbor porpoises, whales, and seals. Sunrise at Burnt Head - The summer day begins with a sunrise that can be best experienced by rising a half-hour before dawn, walking a half mile across the island to the eastern cliffs (in this case, Burnt Head) and waiting for the sun to appear over the ocean. The dawn is shared with seagulls and scrub pine. The flute gradually climbs as the sun ascends and the mood is serene and reverent, finishing with a chorale-like section in Eb. Lobster Cove - Lobster Cove is on the southern tip of the island and is mostly flat and rocky. It sports a wreck of the D.T. Sheridan rusting peacefully by the surf. In the music, I have tried to create a feeling of the rolling waves with guitar arpeggios and odd meters. The flute melodies contain and develop some of the bird songs that I recorded while walking to the cove. Day Trippers - This is a fun movement for mid-day that illustrates the chaotic and sometimes humorous activity found on the dock, Main Street and the beaches when tourists converge on Monhegan for a few hours. The Trails to the Headlands - Monhegan is famous for it's trails. This movement evokes the haunting beauty of the forest. It is quiet and dark with shafts of light illuminating green moss. In foul weather, these trails can be treacherous, but in August they are magical. The trail ultimately leads to the Headlands, opening onto bright sunlight and dramatic cliffs. Waves crashing against the rocks below are suggested by cascading flute arpeggios and dramatic guitar strumming. Few who fall in on this side of the island have been rescued. The danger is real for the reckless and the unlucky. The Library/Jackie and Edward - Jackie Barstow and Edward Vaughan were two of the unlucky ones. In 1926, Edward was supervising Jackie's eleventh birthday party picnic on a flat rock at the base of Black Head when she was swept out to sea by a rogue wave. Edward jumped in to save her. Both were lost. The Monhegan Memorial Library was dedicated to them and provides a quiet place to read and reflect. Here the main theme is stated and developed by both instruments in turn, a simple meditation on the tragic loss of two innocents. Sunset at the Lighthouse - One of the great pleasures of Monhegan is viewing the sunset from lighthouse hill. This movement is related in tone and tempo to the Sunrise movement, building in intensity with the setting sun through quiet expectation, dramatic light and clouds, and vibrant colors. It reprises the reverent chorale of the Sunrise music as the sun descends into the horizon, ending with a promise of return through the use of unsettled seventh-chord harmony. Evening: Friends and Family - Here, the theme loses it's Lydian character as it is set to a simple accompaniment in B Major expressing the warmth of family, friends and laughter. Music that describes the boat journey to the island is recapitulated in portraying the journey back to the mainland. Epilogue -Dream: Winter on the Island - Back home on the mainland - "inshore" as year-rounders call it - the island is still with me in my imagination. Dreaming about what the island is like in winter is reflected musically in a new theme played by solo guitar. When the flute enters, hints of previous themes return in an extended quasi-improvised section. As the movement concludes, guitar themes from the prelude are repeated. The bell buoy sounds a positive chord as it fades away beneath undulating flute arpeggios. Jill Dreeben has performed in numerous solo flute and chamber music concerts throughout New England. She is a founding member of Solar Winds Woodwind Quintet and a member of Kaleidoscope Chamber Ensemble. She has played with the Lumen Contemporary Ensemble, Composers in Red Sneakers and has been a soloist with The Boston Secession. She premiered music written for her by composer John Kusiak and recorded some of his commercial works as well as works by local composers Pasquale Tassone, Armand Qualliotine, Betsy Schramm and James Ricci. Jill Dreeben plays with the New England Orchestra in Lowell and she has performed with Emmanuel Music of Boston. Ms. Dreeben studied with Craig Goodman, Louis Moyse and Lois Schaefer. She earned a BA in Music from Cornell University (1983) and an MM in Flute Performance from New England Conservatory (1987). Currently Ms. Dreeben teaches flute at Brandeis University and maintains a private studio in Arlington, MA. Peter Clemente has performed solo and chamber music throughout New England and has completed successful concert tours in California and in the southwestern United States. He has been featured live in concert/interview radio broadcasts on WGBH, Boston, and KPFK, Los Angeles, and in 1990 made his New York debut at Weil Hall with soprano Katherine Emory. A native of Massachusetts, Mr. Clemente studied the guitar with Richard Provost at the Hartt School of Music, where he is the only guitarist to have received the prestigious Applied Music Award for outstanding musical performance. Later training was with David Leisner at New England Conservatory and with Neil Anderson at the Boston Conservatory. He was the firstprize winner in both the Guitar Foundation of America's International Solo Competition in 1986 and the Ovation Classical Guitar Competition in 1981. He is currently a Lecturer in Music at Assumption College in Worcester, MA. John Kusiak composes music for film, television and live performance. He has scored hundreds of projects, including television documentaries (HBO, IFC, PBS and Sundance), large-screen exhibitions (Yellowstone National Park and the Smithsonian) and feature films (Tabloid, Secrecy, The Singing Revolution and additional music for the 2004 Academy Award winning documentary The Fog of War). His score for Errol Morris' "Tabloid" won the 2012 Cinema Eye Honors Award for Outstanding Achievement in Original Music.

    Born and raised in the Philippines, pianist Victor Santiago Asuncion is recognized as a pianist of innate musical sensitivity and superb technique. As a recitalist and concerto soloist, he has appeared in major concert halls in Canada, Japan, Mexico, and the Philippines. He played his orchestral debut at the age of 18 with the Manila Chamber Orchestra and his New York recital debut in Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall in 1999. In addition, he has worked with conductors including Enrique Batiz, Zev Dorman, Arthur Weisberg, Corrick Brown, David Loebel, and Bobby McFerrin. A chamber music enthusiast, he has performed with artists such as Lynn Harrell, Cho-Liang Lin, James Dunham, Ronald Leonard, Susanne Mentzer, and the Vega and Emerson String quartets at venues that include the Phillips Collection, the Corcoran Gallery, 92nd Street Y, Benaroya, Merkin, Spivey and Shriver Concert Halls, and the Santa Fe, Aspen and Amelia Island Chamber Music Festivals. He was on the chamber music faculty of the Aspen Music Festival and School, as well as the Garth Newel Summer Music Festival. He was also the pianist for the Garth Newel Piano Quartet for three seasons. In addition to his active performing career, Mr. Asuncion is sought after as a piano, vocal, and chamber music coach. He was appointed assistant professor at the University of Memphis in 2003 and coordinator of Piano and Collaborative Arts Studies in 2004. He has given master classes at Minnesota State University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Memphis and the Washington Conservatory. The 2006-2007 season features solo and chamber music performances at Stetson, Vanderbilt, Ouachita Baptist, Henderson and Christian Brothers Universities, The Virginia Military Institute, Randolph-Macon Women's College and University of Mississippi at Oxford, Cerritos Performing Arts Center, Shriver Hall, and the Memphis Chamber Music Society. The seven Taubl children range in age from 11 to 23 and play a variety of classical instruments. Gretchen, the oldest, plays violin and viola. After graduating from Juilliard's pre-college program, Gretchen went on to get her Bachelor's degree in viola performance from the Hartt School and is currently pursuing her Master's there. Emily, age 21, also graduated from the pre-college program at Juilliard and received her Certificate in Cello Performance from the Yale School of Music at age 19. She is currently pursuing a second degree at the Hartt School of Music. Annabelle, age 20, also attends the Hartt School and studies with Nancy Allen, principal harp of the New York Philharmonic, with whom she began her studies while a student at Juilliard. Jack, the oldest son, is 16 years old and plays viola (and baseball!) He has a fabulous high tenor voice and a captivating stage presence. Samuel, age 14, also plays cello (and baseball!) and has been a student at the Juilliard Pre-College since age 8.     Infused with lightness and joy, Susan Conant's music is a blend of Celtic and ethnic inspired melody with classical and jazz harmony. As a composer, performer and teacher on classical and traditional flutes, Conant's programs include her own original chamber music, Celtic and world music, classical music and musical stories. For Conant, now located in Charleston, SC, but previously from the Chicago area, chamber music is both a performance genre that allows her to communicate a deeply personal musical expression and a teaching tool that engages musicians of all ages and abilities in the life-long practice of music. Conant's most recent activities include performing her own compositions and musical stories including performances at the 2009 Piccolo Spoleto's Bishop Gadsden and Children's concerts and as the featured artist for the Chicago Chamber Choir's 2008 spring series. She also just finished arranging and directing her sixth Annual Celebration of Music at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva (UUSG) and will share her "Celebration of a Day" program with the Unitarian Church in Charleston in August 2009. These multi-generational programs are a compilation of instrumental and vocal selections, stories and readings woven together to articulate a spiritual theme. Conant served a one of the music directors and Youth Choir Director at UUSG where her goal was to create an alternative path to worship that enriched the congregation's sense of community. As such, she directed and performed with an assortment of ad-hoc ensembles made up of musicians of all ages and abilities. Composing is an important new direction for Conant. In early 2007, she released her debut CD, A New Leaf, consisting of original chamber works for flute and other instruments. Combining bits and pieces from an eclectic musical background, her evocative music and expressive flute playing paints a lush landscape of moods from contemplative to joyful. She plays regularly for Scottish Country dancing with O're the Border, a Midwest based Scottish band of fiddle, flute and keyboard. Susan was first enchanted by folk music as a young child. Her grandmother (Lily Conant) was a long-time steward of Pinewoods, a folk dance and folk music camp for adults and families in Plymouth, MA. Susan spent her summers there playing early music on the recorder and learning traditional dance and music from the British Isles and North America. This experience showed her how to use music making, storytelling and movement to engage a multi-aged audience. Conant's love of chamber music formed when as a teen, she participated in a youth chamber music class led by Connie Sattler at the Hartt School of Music. Sattler's model of coaching and communicating the love of music through intense study of chamber music continues to provide inspiration. Susan studied flute and recorder with Susan Zimmerman at the Hartford Conservatory and flute with Trix Kout at Longy School of Music She went on to the New England Conservatory of Music where she was a flute performance major studying under Claude Monteux. Jacqueline Schwab, featured on 'Celtic Suite', is well-known for her improvisational piano playing. She has recorded three solo CDs and performs on over forty other albums including the soundtrack for Ken Burns' "Civil War" documentary. Her playing has been described as 'gorgeously spare' (The Boston Globe) yet 'sounds as if she has an orchestra at her fingertips' (Sing Out). Jacqueline's style fits somewhere between folk traditional, classical and new age. Although improvisation is often connected with jazz, Jacqueline derives inspiration from traditional and classical music. Lynn McCanne's expressive piano playing can be heard on 'Duet', 'Fantasy', 'The Tide', and 'Lord Balgonie's Medley'. Lynn performs locally in the western suburbs of Chicago, provides piano music at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, IL and is a member of a number of vocal ensembles. Cynthia Spiegel is an accomplished free-lance soprano and can be heard in many Chicago are churches. She is member of Bella Voce and St Charles Singers. Cynthia performed as soloist in their 2006 tour of France. Conor Mackey ('Dialogue' and 'Sassafras Reel') is a very talented young musician who studies composition at Northern Illinois University. He is equally accomplished on both classical bassoon and electric guitar and moves easily between an eclectic array of musical styles from classical to jazz and funk. A member of the band 'Loose Lips Sink Ships' Conor can be heard touring throughout the midwest. Wendy Evans-Glazier, violinist, ('Lord Balgonie's Medley' and 'Bonnie at Morn') holds a Bachelor of Music degree in performance from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, and a Master of Music degree and Performance Certificate from Northwestern University. She has held positions with the Omaha Symphony, Florida Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Elgin Symphony. She also performs with the Chicago Philharmonic, Ravinia Festival Orchestra, Grant Park Symphony, Chicago Opera Theater, and the Rockford Symphony. As a member of the Telos String Quartet, she performed numerous recitals in the Midwestern states and in Italy. She has recorded with Mannheim Steamroller and John Denver, and performed with such popular artists as Josh Grobin, Patti LaBelle, Vince Gill and Ray Charles. Larry Glazier, cellist, ('Lord Balgonie's Medley' and 'Bonnie at Morn') has held positions with the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Elgin Symphony. He also performs with the Grant Park Symphony, Chicago Lyric Opera, and the Rockford Symphony.

    Pianist, composer and teacher, Leopold Godowsky III (b. 1938), heir to a great musical tradition, is the nephew of George Gershwin and grandson of the legendary pianist-composer Leopold Godowsky. Besides studying music with his father from the age of five, in his early twenties he studied piano with Wolfgang Rosé (student of Arthur Schnabel and Walter Gieseking) and composition with Charles Shackford (student of Paul Hindemith). After graduating from Columbia College and Columbia Teachers College, Godowsky first worked in music publishing and then at Columbia Artists Management, only to discover that indeed his musical gifts warranted a place for him in the world of writing and performing music, and he began concertizing in the U.S. and abroad. He also devoted many years to teaching piano privately and as a member of the faculty at Hartt College of Music. At age 40 after having several years of vivid, inspiring nocturnal dreams with original musical content, Godowsky felt compelled to compose. He wrote chamber music for string quartet, brass quintet, wind quintet, saxophone quartet, harpsichord, piano and an oratorio for vocal quartet. One of his primary goals has been to compose music that has both contemporary and traditional sensibilities, and is highly contrapuntal and emotionally meaningful.

He is currently Associate Professor of Violin at The Hartt School and on the violin and chamber music faculty at New York University. He previously has been on the faculty of the Oberlin Conservatory, Lawrence University, and Swarthmore College. Mr. Miller is a founder and&nbsp,the Artistic Director of the Three Bridges International Chamber Music Festival&nbsp,in Minnesota, and was the co-Artistic Director of the Silver Bay&nbsp,Festival.&nbsp,Past and current festival faculty positions also include The Intensive String Quartet&nbsp,Workshop at New York University, Aria International Academy, The Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, The Festival Eterna Primavera in Cuernavaca Mexico, the Summer Festival of Thessaloniki, Musicorda, Hsing Tien Kon (Taiwan), Bearstown&nbsp,(Korea), Killington, Hot Springs, and New Arts Festival.
