Peripatetic Philosophy in Context (eBook, ePUB)
This book deals with some Peripatetic philosophers of the Hellenistic age (such as Theophrastus of Eresus, Eudemus of Rhodes, Strato of Lampsacus, Clearchus of Soli, and Cratippus of Pergamum) who were direct and indirect pupils of Aristotle. The main focus of the book is Aristotle's school in the Hellenistic period, a subject not particularly explored by the scholars. Three main issues are addressed in the chapters of the book: the problem of knowledge, the question of time, and the doctrine of the soul. More specifically the topics addressed are: the problem of sense-perception and the method of multiple explanations in the field of meteorology in Aristotle, Theophrastus and Epicurus, the epistemology of Strato (by comparison with Speusippus' one), the notion of time in Eudemus and Strato, the conception of sleep in Clearchus, the doctrine of divination in Cratippus. Finally, the Appendix examines the probable influence of the physics of Strato on the medicine of Asclepiades of Bithynia. These themes are investigated by comparing the positions of the Peripatetics with Aristotle's philosophy, but above all (and this is one of the novelties of the book) by contextualising the doctrines of the Peripatetics within the broader framework of Hellenistic philosophies (Old Academy, Epicureanism, and Stoicism).- Shop: buecher

Stoic Philosophy: Ancient Wisdom for Self-Control, Perseverance, and Tranquility of Mind , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 93min
If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment. (Marcus Aurelius, Meditations) If you're into self-help and personal development, you've most likely come across the terms stoicism and stoic philosophy a lot these days. Unlike a fancy-sounding pop psychology trend or personal development quick fix, stoicism is a powerful ancient Greek philosophy concept. It was first introduced by Greek philosopher Zeno of Citium (as far back as 300 BC) as a modification of cynicism which talks about self-control, restraint, and fortitude for combating destructive/harmful emotions. Stoicism in principle doesn't call for completely demolishing emotions, but restructuring them through asceticism (abstinence from pleasures of the world) which eventually leads the individual to attain clearer judgment, a strong sense of inner calmness and liberation from suffering/misery. The ultimate goal of stoicism is freeing your life from suffering. That is what is book is all about. In book one of this two-part series you will learn all things regarding stoicism, including: Philosophy of the mind Pneuma and scala naturae Stoicism and the soul Stoic logic and the mind Stoicism vs. Epicureanism Stoicism and cynicism The history of stoicism The essential ethics of stoicism How you can apply stoic philosophy to your life And much more! "You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength. Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself." (Meditations) ungekürzt. On the Ends of Good and Evil , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 548min
Towards the end of his life and his career as one of the leading politicians and orators in Rome, Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BCE-43 BCE) was exiled to his country house. It was a time of political turmoil in the capital of the empire, caused by the power-grab of Julius Caesar. In the quiet of the countryside, Cicero began to write on philosophy. In On the Ends of Good and Evil, he set out to consider three major traditions of Greek philosophy - Epicureanism, Stoicism and a branch of Platonism proposed by Antiochus of Ascalon (promoting 'the happy life'). Using a form of the dialectical approach established by Plato in his Socratic Dialogues, Cicero introduces characters who propose each tradition, and then Cicero himself responds with a critical appraisal - a stimulating and engaging pattern. De finibus bonorum et malorum (meaning also the 'final or ultimate aim' of good and evil) is a fascinating document. And, as suiting a man of the world (which Cicero clearly was), he comes to a preferred conclusion after surveying the three traditions. Interestingly, the work opens with an introductory passage in which Cicero explains why he is writing a work such as this, giving an intriguing insight into his time. In Rome, he explains, the study of Greek philosophy was the preserve of Romans who read Greek, and translations of the originals into Latin were frowned upon by scholars. Cicero felt this lofty attitude should not be the case. The wisdom of the past should be open to everyone, he argues, and he proceeds to summarise the Greek philosophic traditions and offer critiques for the benefit of his fellow Roman citizens. Epicurus of Samos: His Philosophy and Life: All the Principal Source Texts , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 380min
Epicurus of Samos (341-270 BCE) was the founder of the philosophical system to which he gave his name: Epicureanism. It is a label that is often misused and misunderstood today, with ‘a life of pleasure’ as the key aim misinterpreted as a life of indulgence. In fact, the philosophy of Epicurus demonstrated also by his life, was anything but! He established a school in Athens called The Garden, underpinned by his system of ethics. He promoted, by his own example, a simple, ordered, calm and reflective life.A life of true pleasure, he proposed, is only possible when unharnessed desire for wealth, position, luxury and power has been dissolved and instead steady living and friendship are the watchwords. It is against this background that the understanding and acceptance of the vicissitudes of life, and the inevitability of death, are the rules by which to live. This was in contrast to Platonism on the one hand and the Cynics on the other. The second major facet of Epicurus’ philosophy was his physics, in which he adopted and furthered the theory of atomism introduced by Democritus (460-370 BCE): there was no ‘first mover’, no creation myth, no afterlife. Atoms underpinned all existence. Epicurus was a prodigious author, producing many books - yet very few survive. Diogenes Laertius, the third-century Greek biographer, in his sizeable Lives of Eminent Philosophers, devotes Book X, the final book, to Epicurus. In it he gives an account of the life of the philosopher and including three letters from Epicurus to friends, to Herodotus, Pythocles and Menoeceus. The biography concludes with the concise The Principal Doctrines of Epicurus. Then there are various fragments which have come down to us: The Vatican Sayings (a collection found in the Vatican Library, originally compiled in the 14th century and rediscovered in the 19th century); Epicurean Fragments collected in the 19th century from many classical autho ungekürzt. Robustness: Building a Less-Fragile World , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 391min
Robustness is the ability to deal with stress tests, to act with courage, and to accomplish the necessary while there is time. We live in a world of deficiencies and excesses, and the only miracle - life - exists thanks to balance. This equilibrium is fragile: Humanity’s almightiness threatens to destroy it. Processed foods give us more empty calories than ever before, but fewer nutrients. Life expectancy lengthens, but available time shortens. We receive notifications and interruptions, reducing our ability to focus, to pursue deep work, and to prioritize. Instead of concentrating five hours at a time, we are invited to switch every five minutes. The challenges of carving freedom, calibrating quantities and allocating time have existed at least since the writings of Hippocrates and Seneca over 2,000 years ago, and later on in the works of Paracelsus and Nietzsche. Modernity amplifies the phenomenon, but is not the issue. It is how we approach life. These are the challenges we discuss in Robustness, by combining disciplines often seen as opposites: passion and rationality, freedom and determinism, epicureanism and caloric restriction, metaphysics and physiology, statistics and life stories - not choosing between one or the other, but using both. While popular ideologies paint the world in black or in white, the world needs truth.Robustness embarks the listener on a hedonist manifesto, a joint venture reconciling the divided domains of science and philosophy. The project took Nicolas Pujol to libraries, to research labs meeting scientists, to unexpected encounters with adventurers on volcanoes, and to learn the methods and poignant stories of Robert Marchand, the oldest athlete on the planet. This audiobook is for life enthusiasts: fitness and sports practitioners; epicureans who like to experiment, to taste all flavors with all senses; and those who want to live without indifference, conscious that because life isn't fair, only we ungekürzt.
