Victor Lustig: The Life and Legacy of the 20th Century’s Most Notorious Con Artist , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 87min
“Never pry into a person's personal circumstances (they'll tell you all eventually).” (“The Ten Commandments for Con Men”, attributed to Victor Lustig)The art of the confidence trick is a controversial craft that is as old as time itself. In the early years of civilization, unscrupulous folks bottled and peddled assortments of fake cures and potions. Snake oil salesmen aside, charlatans posed as mystical beings with supernatural powers, promising to end droughts and other misfortunes of the gullible with what were in reality parlor tricks and illusions. Indeed, throughout history, unabashedly brazen characters managed to make careers out of deception. Seventeenth-century Britain, for instance, was terrorized by William Chaloner, the most infamous serial counterfeiter and con artist of his time before he was ultimately bested by Sir Isaac Newton himself. The British trickster posed as a quack doctor and a clairvoyant who dispensed false fortunes (most likely via an early form of cold reading) and bogus healing antidotes, but these were bush-league frauds in comparison to one of his most renowned claims to fame: He once bribed four Jacobite sympathizers to crank out pamphlets regarding King James II's denunciation of His Royal Highness William and later double-crossed his coconspirators by tipping off the cops and swiftly decamping with the $1,000 reward. Confidence women were equally active players in such dirty, fixed games. Doris Payne was a professional pilferer of jewels whose unconventional vocation spanned six decades. Throughout all her hits across the United States, Europe, and Asia, Payne adhered to a simple, yet effective method of operation: She donned stylish, pricey clothes, singled out impressionable male shopkeepers and distracted them with flirtatious small talk, and secretly palmed jewelry with sleight-of-hand tricks. One of the most recent was Frank Abagnale, a career impersonator, former forger of bank checks turned FBI empl ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Pickering. RadioOrbit SC1: Three Special Interviews, Hörbuch, Digital, 533min
Here are three mind-expanding interviews, on Terence McKenna, the ancient Maya, and astrology and spirituality. 1. A Tribute to Terence McKenna, Featuring Dr. Dennis McKenna and Stephen Harrod Buhner Dr. Dennis McKenna pays tribute to his older brother with the help of Stephen Harrod Buhner. Over the past quarter century before his passing, Terence McKenna (1946-2000) had been studying the ontological foundations of shamanism and the ethno-pharmacology of spiritual transformation. An innovative theoretician and spellbinding orator, Terence emerged as a powerful voice for the psychedelic movement and the emerging societal tendency he called "The Archaic Revival". McKenna poetically dispensed enlightened social criticism and new theories about the fractal dynamics of time. 2. John Major Jenkins: The Ancient Maya and the Galactic Alignment of 2012 Over 2,000 years ago, the early Maya formulated a profound galactic cosmology. They saw that the sun, at the winter solstice, was slowly moving toward the heart of the galaxy. Naturally enough, with their uncorrupted intelligence intact, they suspected that the world would go through a transformation when the solar and the galactic planes aligned. They devised their Long Count calendar to pinpoint when the cosmic alignment would maximize, and that time will come in 2012. We are lucky that the brilliant skywatchers who devised the 2012 calendar left carved monuments for us to decode, and that they have survived the decay of centuries, so that we can know exactly what they prophesied and believed about 2012. 3. Rick Levine: Quantum Astrology 2007 and Beyond Rick Levine is an active voice in the astrology community. His special gift is to bridge the gap between astrology and spirituality, science and religion, and the head and the heart. Rick has been involved in the alternative health and natural products industry for 20 years. Language: English. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/sp/real/000002/sp_real_000002_sample.mp3. The Men Commandments, Hörbuch, Digital, 190min
In the best-selling tradition of Clarkson and Moyles, this is TV and Radio personality Christian O'Connell's take on all things men. For ten years Christian has dispensed his wisdom and advice to millions of lucky radio listeners on every topic conceivable. It was when he saw his wife reading and laughing at a book called How to Kill Your Husband that he realised he had to write this book. In his sage opinion, men need to be saved from themselves. Women need to understand men better and stop hating them, and men need to make sense of why they are the way they are. This book reveals some hard but hilarious truths about the male race. Who do men actually look to for inspiration? The Hoff? Simon Cowell? James Blunt? Why do men behave in that odd way at barbecues? Why can a man have his heart broken a thousand times by his football team and yet still forgive them more than he would a woman? With his outspoken humour and his ironic take on life, Christian explores male-dom, celebrating all that is great about being a man and unravelling the mysteries of masculinity that have stumped women for centuries. Includes: Superheroes - all of them let us down. Here's why. The Ultimate History of Men...from caves to Ikea. The Man Test - a highly unscientific flow chart to determine just how confused you are right now. The Perfect Man - if Apple designed men Men and Cooking - the most important part of nutrition: TV snacks. What We Want from Women - show up naked...and bring beer. Rules and Codes - the unwritten, never discussed rules about how to behave in bathrooms, cars, and out and about Men and Sex: "Touch them there and they love it." Imagine a World Without Us - heaven or hell? Communication - friend and foe What's the Point of Us? - enough with the slagging off. Here's Language: English. Narrator: Christian O'Connell. The Palmer Pletsch Complete Guide to Fitting: Sew Great Clothes for Every Body. Fit Any Fashion Pattern
It's been 20 years since the last book about fitting and altering sewing patterns, Fit for Real People. For Palmer and Alto, that means 20 more years of hands-on learning and experience from fitting more "real people" of all shapes and sizes from around the globe. Having long ago dispensed with tedious measuring or making a muslin to check the fit of a sewing pattern, the authors have mastered the process of tissue-fitting. This means simply "trying on" the pattern's tissue pieces to check systematically for where to alter the pattern for a custom fit. The pattern pieces themselves become the "muslin". "Systematically" means following the tissue-fitting sequence they've developed and refined. It's a no-guess order of fitting that ensures success. The book reinforces this sequence since the alteration chapters themselves are ordered in the same sequence. Readers are instructed to start with length and width, move on to the back, check the neck and shoulders, all before even considering how the pattern fits in the bust. As they work through the pattern, sewers will alter the tissue and try on again until the tissue fits well. The book then instructs how to pin-fit the fabric for a final tweaking before sewing. The book explains all facets of pattern fitting and alteration to give readers the background and guidance they need to achieve a custom fit on any pattern from any company. Instructions include: Take just one measurement to determine the right pattern size to buy. Find out what to do if you are between sizes or a different size top and bottom; Make a "body map" with a close-fitting dress pattern to see how you differ from the "standard" on which sewing patterns are based; Learn from "real people" examples of a variety of bodies and their individual alterations; Use the book's new "wrinkle dictionary" to identify a needed pattern alteration. "Wrinkles point to the problem", say the authors, and now you can look up the page reference for a solution; See how age can affect body shape, from preteen to octogenarian; Take note of the latest sewing techniques for garment details that affect fit, such as darts, zips and sleeves, for enhancing the look of a well-fitted garment); Learn basic skills for designing or redesigning for myriad variations using the same pattern. Throughout the book, step-by step instructions are accompanied by full-color photography and a new style of technical art that is extremely clear. Short captions explain each illustration. As a bonus, the authors detail the evolution of ready-to-wear and pattern sizing over the past century, along with their own history in pioneering the art and practice of tissue-fitting.- Shop: buecher

Beyond Ground Zero
Quickbourn is the project of the two Hamburg musicians Christian Meyer-Pedersen and Thomas Kirschler. More by coincidence both met at a bandsession in the fall of 2006. As different as the musical backgrounds of both of them may be they soon dicovered common grounds due to their fruitful collaboration of which their songs give a true reflection. The musical roots of Thomas Kirschler (born 1959) were inevitably situated in the 1970ies and have been influenced by the great hard rock bands of their time like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath or Montrose. Furthermore progbands like YES or ELP. By the end of the 70ies there were bands like HEART or musicians like Jay Ferguson. Considerable influence on his guitarplay had doubtlessly R. Blackmore on the one side and R. Derringer on the other. A personal and unique style was the result. The Quickbourn songs will be more saturated with rock elements and less with progressive styles. It is a synthesis between classic rock riffs, modern synthesizer sounds and beats as well as charactaristic song melodies that meet the listener. Endless instrumental passages have been dispensed of although the songs will be far longer than ordinary modern pop-productions. The collaboration of Christian Meyer-Pedersen (adMeyer) with a progressive musician seemed unusual at first. Born in 1968 his musical background was coloured mainly by Jazz and Blues. However, he had been influenced by a lot of different styles of music, last not least through his work with Burning Mushroom (a formation of seven musicians) as composer, keyboarder and singer in the early 1990ies. The come back of Rhythm and Blues in the 1980ies and the renaissance of the music of the 1960ies with names like John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Les McCann and James Brown, as much as The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic and the Beatles coined the musical developement of Christian Meyer-Pedersen. An entire list of influences would be too long and a clear preference of style is hard to determine. The start up of Quickbourn with Thomas Kirschler seems a logical continuation of his quest to cross new musical boundaries and the results of this collaboration speak for themselves.- Shop: odax

Blues Intervention
"When it comes to building a solid foundation of Blues Music in Canada, there is a new cornerstone being laid and standing firmly on top of that stone is one of our truest Ambassador's of the Blues, Marshall Lawrence. For those that know Marshall, they know that he eats, breathes, lives, and loves the blues, and now with his newest release, 'Blues Intervention', everyone else will be well aware of that too." ... John Vermilyea - Blues Underground Network '... It's still delta-style country blues, but new. In fact, I think Lawrence is following in the footsteps of some very important artists like Bernie Pearl and Corey Harris and Taj Mahal in the way that he is at once historical musicologist and contemporary interpreter....' The Sunday Night Blues Project When spring looks like it is going to stick and stay on the prairies, what comes with it is almost a feeling of salvation for those of us who plodded through another long winter. As calendar pages flip to the last weekend of April, many fine roots music practitioners and fans descend on a charming place slightly off the beaten path. The place is East Coulee, Alberta and the East Coulee Spring Festival announces the arrival of everything that isn't snow or bone chilling winds blowing across everything east of the Rocky Mountains. Arriving in East Coulee is like being transported back to 1958. An old hotel, an old schoolhouse and store fronts from another era stand a few hundred metres from a lazy and beautiful river. On this late April day bluesman Marshall Lawrence brought his brand of acoustic blues to East Coulee. With resonator guitar in hand, perched on a stool with one leg resting comfortably on a vintage suitcase, Lawrence dug into a batch of new original tunes, many of which are tied to decade's old Delta grooves, yet sewn to his lyrics embracing timeless themes. It was a memorable evening, in a year that had been remarkably memorable for Marshall Lawrence. The singer-songwriter, interpreter and performer had, a few months earlier, received the nod from the national blues community through being nominated for a prestigious and national Maple Blues Award. This nomination pushed this hard working and passionate musician's profile up a couple of plateaus, and deservedly so. Lawrence had also been working hard in the studio with two of his respected peers, harmonica player Sherman Doucette and onetime B.B. King bassist Russell Jackson. At those Edmonton recording sessions Lawrence captured his best recorded performances to date, which is what you are listening to now. Assisted by award-winning engineer Barry Allen, Lawrence found his comfort zone and dispensed his acoustic blues with conviction, and a voice that is distinctly his own. The four participants also produced a disc with fine dynamics where the instrumental interplay was given room to breath. While listening to this disc, picture an old, character school house in a magical prairie hamlet, and an attentive audience soaking up the sounds of a prairie bluesman who for an hour or so owns the stage, and that all involved are loving this traditional sound that is announcing a new beginning.- Shop: odax
