Who REALLY killed the Andersons? Who's behind the cover up? That is the question! A 911 call to the San Diego Police Department on August 4, 2013 reporting a two-story fire in Boulevard, California is only the beginning of many harrowing events to follow. After a woman's body and the body of a dog is found inside a detached garage, murdered, a bloody crowbar next to the woman's body, the dog shot in the head, the homeowner and two kids are reported missing. Assuming homeowner James Lee DiMaggio killed the children's mother, Christina Anderson - the woman's body discovered in the garage - setting his home on fire, he then kidnapped Anderson's two children, Hannah age 16 and Ethan age eight. The following day the remains of a child, burned beyond recognition is found inside DiMaggio's burned-to-the-ground home. And even this is only the beginning. After a week-long manhunt, DiMaggio, maybe an innocent man, based on information from San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore, is then shot down by the FBI in what appears to be actions of a firing squad. The public has doubts on the validity of what is being told. Stories continue to morph, and more doubts arise. More and more lies brings the question of Hannah and Brett Anderson's innocence into doubt - at least for the public. But the story doesn't end here. This story is only beginning... ungekürzt. Seventy baseball seasons ago, on a May afternoon at Yankee Stadium, Joe DiMaggio lined a hard single to left field. It was the quiet beginning to the most resonant baseball achievement of all time. Starting that day, the vaunted Yankee center fielder kept on hitting - at least one hit in game after game after game. In the summer of 1941, as Nazi forces moved relentlessly across Europe and young American men were drafted by the millions, it seemed only a matter of time before the U.S. went to war. The nation was apprehensive. Yet for two months in that tense summer, America was captivated by DiMaggio's astonishing hitting streak. In 56, Kostya Kennedy tells the remarkable story of how the streak found its way into countless lives, from the Italian kitchens of Newark to the playgrounds of Queens to the San Francisco streets of North Beach; from the Oval Office of FDR to the Upper West Side apartment where Joe's first wife, Dorothy, the movie starlet, was expecting a child. In this crisp, evocative narrative Joe DiMaggio emerges in a previously unseen light, a 26-year-old on the cusp of becoming an icon. He comes alive - a driven ballplayer, a mercurial star and a conflicted husband - as the tension and the scrutiny upon him build with each passing day. DiMaggio's achievement lives on as the greatest of sports records. Alongside the story of DiMaggio's dramatic quest, Kennedy deftly examines the peculiar nature of hitting streaks and with an incisive, modern-day perspective gets inside the number itself, as its sheer improbability heightens both the math and the magic of 56 games in a row. ungekürzt. Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, distinct but similar-type players, were arguably baseball's greatest player and baseball's greatest hitter. In their first major league seasons, Joe scored a rookie-record 132 runs, and Ted drove home a rookie-record 145 runs. More than 70 years later, their records still stand. Joe should have batted .400 in 1939; Ted did hit .406 in 1941. Batting .412 in early September, the Clipper suffered a serious eye infection, and his average plummeted to 381, which was still 21 points higher than Jimmie Foxx, the runner-up hitter in the batting race. The year 1941 was a mystical one in baseball history. DiMag hit safely in a record 56 consecutive games. During Joe's sensational run, Ted out hit him, .412 to .406. Unbelievably, at the All-Star Game, Joe's streak stood at 48 consecutive games, and Ted was batting .404. You can believe that they got the attention of the other stars that year. Ted won Triple Crowns but not MVP awards in both 1942 and 1947. (There are two stories there.) Joe beat out Ted in the 1947 voting, 202 to 201. The Kid hit the game-winning walk-off home run in the 1941 All-Star Game. In the 1946 Mid-summer Classic, he got four hits, including two home runs, one of them the first ever four-base blast off Rip Sewell's celebrated "eephus ball" pitch. Early in 1947, co-owner Dan Topping of the Yankees and owner Tom Yawkey of the Red Sox agreed on an even-up trade of Joe for Ted. If it had been made, it would have altered baseball history considerably. Joe and Ted were known for their gallant comebacks. In his last three years (1949-1951), the Clipper returned from either injury or illness to lead the Yankees to three consecutive world titles. In his last three games of the 1951 World Series, his final one, he batted .545 with one home run and five RBI. In his last major league at bat, he doubled off the right center field wall at Yankee Stadium. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Troy Klein. On July 17, 1941, the streak ended. Many people know immediately what that streak is - explaining it is not even necessary. Certainly, the title gives plenty of foreshadowing to "the rest of the story", as Paul Harvey used to say. However, as stories go, we must explain the beginning before we get to the end; and in this saga the beginning starts in Cleveland. For those of you who are impatient, the story is about baseball; however, you will find that this tale contains so much more. You should also know that this narrative, while about baseball, is ultimately a mystery. Of course, there are many of you who are saying, "What story starts in Cleveland?" Nevertheless, the writer will attempt to dissuade that opinion. This book examines the hex, or jinx put on the New York Yankees' Joe DiMaggio by an unsuspecting Cleveland cabbie on July 17, 1941. While there have been many publications that review Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak, and many that mention this Cleveland cab driver, no solid evidence or background has been provided on this particular subject. Further, many have overlooked the historical importance of the mysterious Cleveland cabbie; this work will attempt to accomplish this task. This book is a case in short; it reveals information not previously known to the baseball community at large and offers, through the course of investigation, new insights into the reasons for the ending of Joe DiMaggio's now legendary consecutive games hit streak. In this case the listener will find out just who this cabbie was, and discover how the cabdriver contributes to a new, previously untold baseball narrative. ungekürzt. Language: English.
