Hamburg Maschine revisited:
In its second term from 2018 to 2020, the urban initiative project "Stadtkuratorin Hamburg" centered around the theme of digitality in the context of art in the public sphere with the title HAMBURG MASCHINE. This publication documents, updates, and expands the program developed and curated by Dirck Möllmann. The artists invited by him have created image spreads about their projects and have talked about their work with dialog partners of their choice. The artistic contributions are complemented with essays by international authors who - loosely based on Möllmann's concept HAMBURG MASCHINE - deal with the topics of digitality, urbanity, work, care, pandemics, collectivity, economy and the all-connecting Internet in different ways. The artistically designed volume aims to provide impetus for thought and action in times of digitalization of urban life, which is progressing all too hastily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With contributions by Erik Bordeleau, Michael Dudeck, John Gerrard, Christian Huck, Francis Hunger, Nina Kalenbach, Oliver Leistert, Isabell Lorey, AnneMarie Maes, Britta Peters, Martina Raponi, Marius Skroce, Sue Spaid, Axel Stockburger, The Silent University (Abimbola Ayodele, Salah Zater), Kathrin Wildner, Inga Wellmann. The book will be published in English.- Shop: buecher

August Macke - Franz Marc
In 1910, August Macke (1887-1914) visited Franz Marc (1880-1916) in his studio in Munich for the first time. This marks the beginning of a close friendship, which was unique among the early Modernists - not only personally, but especially artistically. The present volume brings together for the first time numerous letters, recollections and eyewitness accounts from these years. Harrowing letters from the artists from the field and from their wives back home are complemented by hitherto unpublished accounts on the precise circumstances surrounding Macke's death.- Shop: buecher

In Development , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 694min
From a young age, Cobie Galloway made a career of playing the girl-next-door on the silver screen. Only, she's not a teenager anymore. Ready to challenge herself artistically and earn the part she's always dreamed of, she's forced to face the realization that in order to win the roles afforded to edgier actresses, she might first have to audition by playing someone edgier in her day-to-day life.Pop star Lila Wilder built a multimedia empire by always having her finger on the pulse of what's hot. However, as she struggles to produce her next smash hit record, she's finding it hard to keep her name in the public eye, and a string of tumultuous relationships with Hollywood boy toys no longer captivates anyone's attention. Both women tentatively agree to a headline-grabbing fauxmance, with two simple rules: Always stick to the script, and never forget that on the stage of public perception, nothing is real. Can two women find love in a world of carefully crafted illusions, or will a successful charade mean the potential for something more gets left on the cutting-room floor? ungekürzt. Comic Books as History: The Narrative Art of Jack Jackson, Art Spiegelman, and Harvey Pekar , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 306min
This well focused and perceptive analysis of a phenomenon in our popular culture - the new respectability of the comic book form - argues that the comics medium has a productive tradition of telling true stories with grace and economy. It details vividly the outburst of underground comics in the late 1960s and '70s, whose cadre of artistically gifted creators were committed to writing comic books for adults, an audience they made aware that comic books can offer narratives of great power and technical sophistication. In this study Joseph Witek examines the rise of the comic book to a position of importance in modern culture and assesses its ideological and historical implications. Jack Jackson, Art Spiegelman, and Harvey Pekar are among the creators whom Witek credits for the emergence of the comic book as a serious artistic medium. As American codes of ethics, aesthetics, and semiotics have evolved, so too has the comic book as a mode for presenting the weightier matters of history. It is safe to claim that comic books are not just for kids anymore. The book is published by University Press of Mississippi. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gabriel Russo. The Double Life of Liliane , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 448min
Lily Tuck has had a wonderful and accomplished career as a National Book Award-winning novelist, story writer, essayist, and biographer. She is one of our most distinguished contributors to American literature. With The Double Life of Liliane, Tuck writes what may well be her crowning achievement to date, and, significantly, too, her most autobiographical work. As the child of a German movie producer father who lives in Italy and a beautiful, artistically talented mother who resides in New York, Liliane's life is divided between those two very different worlds. A shy and observant only child with a vivid imagination, Liliane uncovers the stories of family members as diverse as Moses Mendelssohn, Mary Queen of Scots and an early Mexican adventurer, and pieces together their vivid histories, through both World Wars and across continents. What unfolds is an astonishing and riveting metanarrative: an exploration of self, humanity, and family in the manner of W.G. Sebald and Karl Ove Knausgaard. Told with Tuck's inimitable elegance and a rich and varied array of characters, The Double Life of Liliane is an intimate and poignant coming-of-age portrait of the writer as a young woman. ungekürzt. A Real Daughter , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 381min
A Real Daughter is a horror novel that offers a frightening take on step-parenting and a disturbing testament to the unknown in all of us. When her infant daughter Sarah unexpectedly dies, Claire moves to Los Angeles and reinvents herself as a landscape gardener. There, Claire imagines Sarah alive, marking the child’s birthdays, Christmas, first day of school - almost as if Sarah never died. Remarrying, Claire acquires a step-daughter about the same age Sarah would have been. But eight-year-old Mandy - part vamp, part jealous, and a troubled child - is nothing like Sarah, who still lives on in Claire's imagination. As Claire lives two lives - one real, one imagined - the clash between the two daughters threatens to destroy her, releasing her demons and forcing her to choose between a new life and a haunted past. Praise for A Real Daughter: “A morbidly eerie and artistically crafted psychological thriller” (Kirkus Reviews) "A Real Daughter is the real thing: a compelling, psychologically astute inquiry into the seismic shifts of one, uneasily blending California family haunted by the past." (Cristina Garcia, National Book Award Finalist for Dreaming in Cuban) "The writing is luscious and chilling. Expect to be afraid - and then horrified." Drought , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 332min
Do you believe that a drought of the land which causes many people to die of famine or a drought of the human soul that affects the lives of those nearest to him/her is more devastating? Can droughts of the soul can be more damaging than those of the soil? The analogy buried in the book Drought uncovers the dichotomy (or juxtaposition) of both.In one storyline, we meet Anoop, a boy who lives in 1876 India and is named for water yet battles the lack of water on his family farm. The desire of his heart is to do something great, maybe by bringing water to the world, but he ends up watering in a greater capacity. In the second storyline, Conifer, named for an evergreen tree, is an autistic twin living in Oregon over 100 years later, who speaks only in rapped song lyrics. This human Conifer needs to be watered to enable him to grow and become the mature man that he was destined to be, despite having a father who nurtures his son’s roots with nothing but drought. The reality that we all need water to survive is artistically portrayed in this analogical tale with a touch of history and science added for depth. ungekürzt.
