Grant Moves South , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1078min
A Pulitzer Prize-winning historian's acclaimed Civil War history of the complex man and controversial Union commander whose battlefield brilliance ensured the downfall of the Confederacy. Preeminent Civil War historian Bruce Catton narrows his focus on commander Ulysses S. Grant, whose bold tactics and relentless dedication to the Union ultimately ensured a Northern victory in the nation's bloodiest conflict. While a succession of Union generals - from McClellan to Burnside to Hooker to Meade - were losing battles and sacrificing troops due to ego, egregious errors, and incompetence, an unassuming Federal Army commander was excelling in the Western theater of operations. Though unskilled in military power politics and disregarded by his peers, Colonel Grant, commander of the Twenty-First Illinois Volunteer Infantry, was proving to be an unstoppable force. He won victory after victory at Belmont, Fort Henry, and Fort Donelson, while brilliantly avoiding near-catastrophe and ultimately triumphing at Shiloh. And Grant's bold maneuvers at Vicksburg would cost the Confederacy its invaluable lifeline: the Mississippi River. But destiny and President Lincoln had even loftier plans for Grant, placing nothing less than the future of an entire nation in the capable hands of the North's most valuable military leader. Based in large part on military communiqués, personal eyewitness accounts, and Grant's own writings, Catton's extraordinary history offers listeners an insightful look at arguably the most innovative Civil War battlefield strategist, unmatched by even the South's legendary Robert E. Lee. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bronson Pinchot. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/026013/bk_adbl_026013_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.- Shop: Audible

Halliburton's Army: How a Well-Connected Texas Oil Company Revolutionized the Way America Makes War , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 783min
Halliburtons Army is the first book to show, in shocking detail, how Halliburton really does business in Iraq and around the world. From its vital role as the logistical backbone of the U.S. occupation in Iraq to its role in covering up gang-rape amongst its personnel in Baghdad, Halliburtons Army is a devastating bestiary of corporate malfeasance and political cronyism. Pratap Chatterjeeone of the worlds leading authorities on corporate crime, fraud, and corruption shows how Halliburton won and then lost its contracts in Iraq, what Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld did for it, and who the company paid off in the U.S. Congress. He brings us inside the Pentagon meetings, where Cheney and Rumsfeld made the decision to send Halliburton to Iraqas well as many other hot-spots, including Somalia, Yugoslavia, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Guantnamo Bay, and, most recently, New Orleans. He travels to Dubai, where Halliburton has recently moved its headquarters, and exposes the companys freewheeling ways: executives leading the high life, bribes, graft, skimming, offshore subsidiaries, and the whole arsenal of fraud. Finally, Chatterjee reveals the human costs of the privatization of American military affairs, which is sustained almost entirely by low-paid unskilled Third World workers who work in incredibly dangerous conditions without any labor protection. Halliburtons Armyis a hair-raising expos of one of the worlds most lethal corporations, essential reading for anyone concerned about the nexus of private companies, government, and war. ungekürzt. The Rain in Spain: Lydia Gets in More Trouble on Charlie's European Location Shoots, Challenging Him and Their "Spanking Marriage": The Discipline for a Lasting Marriage Series, Book 13 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 136min, (USK 18)
As Charlie films in and around Madrid, Craig and Lydia join him, along with Craig's adored and adoring nanny, Maybelle. All seems to be going smoothly until Lydia and Charlie have a minor disagreement about building a treehouse for Craig. And Charlie must warn Lydia - as part of their spanking contract - to leave the project to him. Within days, a heavy rain comes and Lydia worries the raw, untreated wood of the treehouse kit will be ruined. So she makes a fateful decision about the kit that puts them cross-wise of each other when he returns to the villa. Then Charlie brings home two of the Andalusian horses featured in his movie, so he can train with them. And soon finds Lydia, an unskilled rider, up on one of the horses in the exercise yard, never mind their spanking contract says she must only ride horseback accompanied by a skilled rider. Note: This book contains vivid descriptions of sexual activity, domestic discipline, the spanking of an adult woman, anal sex, and anal discipline. If such scenes offend you or trigger you, please do not purchase this book. In addition, the series is also about two young, devoted married people growing and maturing together over the course of multiple story lines; they are flawed, loving, devoted human beings, and therefore make mistakes they try to correct. Adventures in Colonial America: Volume IV: Georgia: From Debtor's Haven to Revolutionary Battleground , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 109min
Georgia: From Debtor's Haven to Revolutionary Battleground is the 4th installment in the Adventures in Colonial America series, focusing on the Georgia colony. James Oglethorpe and the "Georgia Trustees" founded the Georgia colony as a haven for Britain's poor and unskilled, where they could live, learn a skill, and become productive members of society. However, the best of intentions often do not come to fruition, and the Georgia colony was no exception. Rather than a debtor's haven, Georgia became a military stronghold, involved in border wars, wars with Native Indians, other colonies, and France and Spain. Attempts by Oglethorpe and the Georgia Trustees to keep Georgia free from slavery were unsuccessful because of pressure from the middle class and British commercial interests. King George's War and the War of Jenkins' Ear provided Georgia's militia with military experience that would prove invaluable in later decades. During the American Revolution, two major sieges occurred, at Augusta and Savannah but the Continental Army and militia were able to push the British from Georgia ultimately resulting in the British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia. The men who put aside their social and political differences to resolve a hard-fought argument about independence, write a state constitution, and ratify the U.S. Constitution, will also be recognized. Finally, returning to the debtor's situation, the special topic will discuss the plight of the debtor in the 18th Century. Shays' Rebellion - the dangerous confrontation between western Massachusetts and the government that turned violent - will also be discussed because of the threat it posed to the young nation. ungekürzt. After saving for years, Sam finally has enough to chase her dream of owning and operating a small roadside motel. When she arrives, she finds her new business in a derelict state that makes Sam second-guess her decision to move. For Olly Jones, home has always been in the stretch of road between houses. She feels an inexplicable, irrepressible tug pulling her ever forward, searching for...something. She trusts she'll know it when she finds it. Sam and Olly's first meeting is explosive with accusations of trespass and vandalism, backed up by mace. But when Sam puts up a flyer seeking skilled labor at an unskilled labor price, Olly is the only one who shows up for the job. Despite her initial reservations, Sam hires her and eventually realizes Olly is exactly what she needs. Charmed by Bitterroot and drawn in by Sam's fierce independence, Olly lingers longer than normal. For the first time, she sees a potential for home and family. The Common Laborer , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 7min
Eugene Victor Debs (1855 - 1926) was a political activist, trade unionist, and five times the candidate of the Socialist Party of America for president of the United States. This essay appeared in the Terre Haute Locomotive Firemen’s Magazine, April 1890. Debs expresses concern for the vast number of workingmen without trades, who are often termed “unskilled” laborers. He argues that their importance in carrying forward the great industrial enterprises of the world has not been recognized in the past, and was not appreciated at the time. He also mentions that the term “skill” is often used in a sense which does great injustice to men who do not wear the badge of some particular trade, and hence, the term “skilled laborer” is never applied to men who are known as “common laborers.” He states that “the American idea is to obtain such wages for work as will make the American home comfortable, where there shall be an abundance of food, decent clothing, apartments for rest and recreation...fit places for American children to be born and reared, and when the wages are sufficient to secure such needs the American idea is to maintain them, and when wages fall below securing such requirements the American idea is to organize for the purpose of obtaining them.” Debs emphasizes that the American workingman is an American citizen, and that he has the same sovereign rights and prerogatives as any other citizen. To that he adds that if the workingman can secure sufficient wages, he will be in a position to appreciate his privileges and dignity. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: J. T. Murray. The Neanderthals Are Back: The Beginning is the first of a series of stories about the life of Neanderthals growing up in modern society after two scientists bring them back with the help of some surrogate mothers. This audiobook focuses on the story of the first six Neanderthal babies as they grow up. At first, they are raised in the lab in secret and taught by a nursery school teacher. When the children are five and six, the scientists place them with the owners of a group home for children with disabilities. The stories follow the Neanderthal children as they grow up, go to school, have relationships with other children, go through their teenage years, and start working in unskilled jobs in their early 20s. Along the way they face many challenges, including bullying, romances with humans, and a strike for better working conditions. Some even participate in experiments where they get a genius pill that makes them suddenly smart for a while. Meanwhile, scientists in other areas of the country bring back other Neanderthal kids. The Beginning features the six children’s first years of being born, growing up in the lab, and being introduced to their group home. We also get to know the kids who have very different personalities - from being a leader to being very friendly and social or being quiet and shy. Then, when one boy goes exploring, this leads to a series of events, resulting in the media discovering the Neanderthals, leading to the question: "What do we do now?"The audiobook is the beginning of a unique compelling series that raises many issues that might occur should the Neanderthals really be brought back, which could happen. ungekürzt. Sources of Power: How People Make Decisions (The MIT Press) , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 790min
A modern classic about how people really make decisions: Drawing on prior experience, using a combination of intuition and analysis. Since its publication twenty years ago, Sources of Power has been enormously influential. The book has sold more than 50,000 copies, has been translated into six languages, has been cited in professional journals that range from Journal of Marketing Research to Journal of Nursing, and is mentioned by Malcolm Gladwell in Blink. Author Gary Klein has collaborated with Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman and served on a team that redesigned the White House Situation Room to support more effective decision making. The model of decision making Klein proposes in the book has been adopted in fields including law enforcement training and petrochemical plant operation. What is the ground-breaking new way to approach decision making described in this modern classic? We have all seen images of firefighters rescuing people from burning buildings and paramedics treating bombing victims. How do these individuals make the split-second decisions that save lives? Most studies of decision making, based on artificial tasks assigned in laboratory settings, view people as biased and unskilled. Klein proposes a naturalistic approach to decision making, which views people as gaining experience that enables them to use a combination of intuition and analysis to make decisions. To illustrate this approach, Klein tells stories of people - from pilots to chess masters - acting under such real-life constraints as time pressure, high stakes, personal responsibility, and shifting conditions. This first ever audio edition of Sources of Power is masterfully narrated by Mike Fraser, an Audible listener favorite.PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio. ungekürzt.
