Strange and Obscure Stories of the Civil War , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 345min
Strange and Obscure Stories of the Civil War is an entertaining look at the Civil War stories that don’t get told, and the misadventures you haven’t read about in history books. Share in all the humorous and strange events that took place behind the scenes of some of the most famous Civil War moments. Picture a pedestal in a public park with no statue on top; Rowland’s book explains that when the members of the New York Monument Commission went to hire a sculptor to finish the statue, they were shocked to discover that there was no money left in the agency’s accounts to pay for the project. The money for the statue of Dan Sickles had been stolen—stolen by former monument committee chairman Dan Sickles! Brig. Gen. Philip Kearny was the son of a New York tycoon who had helped found the New York Stock Exchange, and who groomed his boy to be a force on Wall Street. The younger Kearny decided his call was to be a force on the field of battle, so despite a law degree and an inheritance of better than $1 million, he joined the U.S. Army and studied cavalry tactics in France. His dashing figure in the saddle earned him the name of Kearny the Magnificent, probably because Kearny rode with a pistol in one hand and a sword in the other while holding the horse’s reins in his teeth. This habit proved useful after he lost his left arm in the Mexican War, because he was able to continue to wave his sword with all the menace to which he was accustomed while still guiding his horse. ungekürzt. Hancock the Superb: The Life and Career of General Winfield Scott Hancock , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 145min
General Hancock is one of the handsomest men in the United States Army. He is tall in stature, robust in figure, with movements of easy dignity...in action...dignity gives way to activity; his features become animated, his voice loud, his eyes are on fire, his blood kindles, and his bearing is that of a man carried away by passion - the character of his bravery. (Regis de Trobriand) Winfield Scott Hancock was an intimidating figure who impressed friends, foes, and fellow generals alike. Known as Hancock the Superb after McClellan described his performance as such during the Battle of Williamsburg in the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, Hancock eventually rose to become the Army of the Potomac's greatest corps commander. Though his reputation and legacy gradually faded over time, Hancock was one of the North's foremost war heroes by the end of the war, and he nearly became president in 1880 when he was just barely defeated by a less decorated Civil War veteran, James Garfield. Nobody in the Army of the Potomac was in the thick of its biggest battles as often as Hancock and the men he commanded. Hancock superbly led his brigade during the Peninsula Campaign, temporarily commanded a division at Antietam in the center of the lines at the Sunken Lane, and his division was the last to withdraw across the river during the Battle of Chancellorsville. After the Battle of Chancellorsville, he fortuitously became the new II Corps commander in the Army of the Potomac, just in time to deliver his greatest performance of all. At Gettysburg, Hancock was the commanding general in the field on day one, as Meade and the rest of the Union army arrived later that night. On day two, Hancock's men assisted Sickles' III Corps when Sickles disobeyed orders and moved it forward, creating a gap in the Union lines. And on day three, Hancock's greatest day of the war, he was seriously injured and nearly bled to death while leading his men in their decisive repulse of Pi ungekürzt. Language: English. To the Best of Our Knowledge: The Great American Scoundrel, Hörbuch, Digital, 52min
In this hour, we needed a working definition of the word “scoundrel”. For that, we headed to lexicographer Erin McKean. She’s the founder and CEO of the online dictionary Wordnik. She was also the Principal Editor of The New Oxford American Dictionary. Steve Paulson sat down with her.Next, we might not have the perfect definition of the word “scoundrel” but we can certainly agree on one thing – Civil War General and US Congressman Daniel Sickles was the epitome of a scoundrel. Seriously. Check out this list: murder, political corruption, affairs with queens and prostitutes… and there’s more than meets the eye about that leg he lost at Gettysburg. Then, “Scoundrel” is such an old-fashioned word. I mean, who uses it anymore? Aren’t there any scoundrels today? We looked no further then the world of political opposition research. Shadowy political operatives who dig up the muck on a candidate’s opponents. those running for office. Adultery, back taxes, DUIs, illegitimate children… you name it and they find it.After that, where are the female scalawags? The lady rogue? Well, Anne Strainchamps set out to find out. She called up Elizabeth Mahon, author of the blog and the book of the same name: Scandalous Women. And finally, we found a modern-day huckster. His name is Rev. Ivan Stang and he’s the co-founder of a cult called The Church of the SubGenius. Its members worship a pipe smoking man god named Bob Dobbs and claim to be a superior race descended from the Yeti. Their theology is summed up in one word; “Slack.” [Broadcast Date: January 11, 2013] Language: English. Narrator: Jim Fleming.
