The Problem with My Normal Penis (eBook, ePUB)
An Evening Standard 'One to Watch' in 2022 A POWERFUL MEMOIR AND MANIFESTO CHALLENGING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A BLACK MAN IN BRITAIN You're a black man. Aggressive. Athletic. Feared. Fetishised. Policed. Politicised. It's limiting. It's tiring. And it's not true. In this important and inspiring book, Obioma Ugoala tells his own story as he examines the problems with how race, sex and masculinity are portrayed and experienced by Black men - and how to change that. 'Whipsmart and refreshingly vulnerable. In this book, Obioma Ugoala brilliantly exposes the systems and the individuals that have long perpetuated dangerous and irresponsible ideals around Blackness and masculinity.' Candice Carty-Williams, author of Queenie "A blisteringly honest take on contemporary Britishness that manages to be both nuanced and shocking. Highly recommended." Afua Hirsch, author of Brit(ish) "A valiant venture of a book that is somehow both tender memoir and unflinching excavation of the sociological blights that affect both self and society. Looking outward, inwards and forward, it lucidly explores complicated truths. Hopeful and honest, uncomfortable and encouraging, it is a book this country needs." Bolu Babalola, author of Love in Colour "An urgent, personal, compassionate book that never backs away from the difficulty of what we are facing but provides a forgiving mirror and a useable map so we can truly reflect & navigate. Obioma Ugoala's treatise should be a set text for a world in crisis." Deborah Frances White 'In his enquiring memoir, he astutely explores where the expectations of his race and masculinity meet, unpicking and challenging his past experiences of prejudice. His personal stories are told in the context of the wider culture, and the book is a compassionate rallying cry to be more conscious.' Evening Standard 'Why can't I be seen for who I am? What is the problem with my normal penis?' Obioma Ugoala is an actor, activist, singer, writer, Arsenal supporter and rugby player. A brother, son and loyal friend whose passions and influences range from Mozart to Mariah Carey, from The Karate Kid to Sidney Poitier. He is also a man of mixed Nigerian and Irish heritage and throughout his life, whether in the classroom, the changing room, the rehearsal room or the bedroom, he has had to contend with people failing to address their own prejudices about what they conceive a Black man to be. In this ground-breaking and revealing account, Ugoala confronts these prejudices head on, challenging notions of race, sex and masculinity that have over centuries become embedded in British society, poisoning the public discourse and blighting people's lives - including, on occasion, his own. With unflinching honesty, Ugoala talks about his own experiences and challenges us all to face our personal failings, while offering a vision of a more positive future if we dare to do better.- Shop: buecher

Die Lieder Vol.8
Roger Vignoles (Piano) astutely notes that Strauss's songs cannot be played "without a vivid sense of the orchestral colours and textures that they imply", so how better to conclude our series of the complete songs than with the piano-accompanied versions of the Vier letzte Lieder? These wondrous valedictions are the summation of a great composer's love affair with the voice, written at the very end of a long creative life.- Shop: odax

ERIC GROSS (b.1926) Track 9 - MINIATURE FOR RAY OP.195A (1994) This simple, relaxed composition was, in it's original version, a piece for solo piano, dedicated to the pianist Ray Lemond. This arrangement has been specially created for Adrian Hooper and the Sydney Mandolins, as a small gesture of thanks for their support of Australian composers. This version has previously been released on JADE CD 1078 (Fandango). EG ROBERT ALLWORTH (b.1943) Track 10 - ANTHEM FOR THE BLESSED MARY MACKILLOP (2007) Composed for the Sisters of Saint Joseph of The Sacred Heart. This composition is a reworking of an earlier piece titled TWILIGHT, composed for the Sydney Mandolins. The music has a stately procession - like quality and certainly captures the serene stature of MARY MACKILLOP beatified in 1995 by Pope John Paul II in Sydney, Australia. Sr. Margaret T Cusack of the Order of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart has been a great influence on the composer's devotion to Blessed MARY MACKILLOP. Sr. Margaret T Cusack RSJ also advised the following information: Mary Mackillop made her religious profession on the 15th August 1867 in Adelaide, South AUSTRALIA. On June 1st Mary Mackillop was blessed by Pope Pius IX in 1873. The rule of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart was finally approved by Pope Leo XIII in 1888. Colin Brumby plays Study in Green on this recording. The Album Leaf for Piano composed in 1978 was written for Lenka Nemec later to become Lenka Hill wife of Paul Hill, a friend of the composer. DEREK STRAHAN (b.1935) Track 14 - PERPETUAL EMOTION for Flute and Guitar (1963) Revised and completed 2005. Perpetual Emotion evinces that self-eviscerating state of constant emotional excitation known as being in love which as G. B. Shaw astutely noted leads to a state of temporary insanity in which the application of rational thought is impossible. Following a languorous prelude, fast chromatic passages are propelled by urgent guitar chords and self propagating phrases are hurled around with decreasing regard for either form or structure, (though the latter is sufficiently indicated to show what is being disregarded.) V.Ashkenazy spielt Chopin,Rachmaninoff,Liszt
"Ashkenazy was in his early twenties when he set down these recordings ... It's inevitable that this evinces youthful fire but it's accompanied by a tempering rigorousness of mind and of execution ... where poetic richness is required it's channelled through an astute modernity. There is great clarity, no over-romanticism, pedalling is invariably astutely presented, and the rhythm is resilient." (MusicWeb)- Shop: odax
