Lemuel Gulliver, English surgeon turned ship captain, embarks on four fantastic voyages, each a clash with strange beings and cultures - from the eccentric to the odious. Island by island, he meets the savage but tiny Lilliputians, the hideous Yahoos, a stable of talking horses, a race of decrepit immortals, and the ghosts of Julius Caesar and Homer.A parody of the popular seafaring narratives of his time, a harsh judgment against inherently corrupt human nature, and a satire of the ways of England, Swift's masterpiece was written "to vex the world rather than divert it." Gulliver's Travels, Hörbuch, Digital, 189min
Gulliver's Travels describes the four voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon. In Lilliput he discovers a world in miniature; towering over the people and their city, he is able to view their society from the viewpoint of a god. However, in Brobdingnag, a land of giants, tiny Gulliver himself comes under observation, exhibited as a curiosity at markets and fairs. In Laputa, a flying island, he encounters a society of speculators and projectors who have lost all grip on everyday reality; while they plan and calculate, their country lies in ruins. Gulliver's final voyage takes him to the land of the Houyhnhnms, gentle horses whom he quickly comes to admire, in contrast to the Yahoos, filthy bestial creatures who bear a disturbing resemblance to humans.Written "to vex the world rather than divert it", and first published in 1726, Jonathan Swift's satirical novel skillfully uses comic inversions to offer telling insights into the nature of man and society.

Jessica de Vrais was 22, the only child of an elderly and irritable widower. Though they thought alike on almost all matters, they agreed on none; least of all did they see eye to eye on the subject of men. Jessica, pretty and popular, invited them to come and stay; Mr. de Vrais, irritable and suspicious, invited them to go away and stay away. Fortune-hunters all, he said furiously to his daughter. One and all, they were after her money - his money. One look, he shouted, and he could smell them a mile off. Hangers-on. Yahoos. Parasites. When Jessica, at the end of June, announced that she was engaged to one of them - a young Frenchman named Hubert Ramage, whom she had known for little more than two weeks - Mr. de Vrais granted to the suitor a short interview and at the end of it announced that any further communication between the couple would be made over his dead body.On a cool, September morning she rose rose early, left a conclusive little note for her father, carried her suitcases down to the car, and drove into St. Helier to catch the boat to St. Malo. When her father read the note, it said, she would be married to Hubert. Unfortunately, she took the family jewels with her, in case her marriage didn’t work out.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Gulliver's Travels , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 692min
Set and written in 1726, This is a marvelously imaginative tale of the four voyages of Lemuel Gulliver. He finds himself shipwrecked and the prisoner of captors ranging in size from 6 inches tall to 60 feet tall and of various other persuasions. But this is just the beginning of a story written, strangely enough to satirize the foolishness and vices of modern men as they were perceived at the time. No one, young or old, can ever forget the Lilliputians and the Yahoos that starred in these wonderful and riveting stories of long ago. Jonathan Swift (1667–1745) was an Irish novelist, satirist, poet and political essayist. From a very literary family, his uncle married the daughter of a godson of William Shakespeare, Swift was very well educated, receiving an MA from Oxford University and a Doctorate in Divinity from Trinity College in Dublin. An ordained priest in the Established Church of Ireland, Swift began writing satire, inspired by his misery in his profession. Politically active, Swift incurred the enmity of enough British nobles, that his career as a minister was over. Swift began writing novels, while also writing political pamphlets promoting Irish causes. Swift's best known work, Gulliver's Travels is filled with satiric references to his current events, and was an immediate hit, written anonymously, it had to be smuggled into Ireland. The Queen was not amused. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Thorn. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/alca/000013/bk_alca_000013_sample.mp3.
Spending the Holidays with People I Want to Punch in the Throat: Yuletide Yahoos, Ho-Ho-Humblebraggers, and Other Seasonal Scourges , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 318min
For fans of Laurie Notaro and Jenny Lawson comes an uproarious and oddly endearing essay collection for anyone trying to survive the holidays in one piece. When it comes to time-honored holiday traditions, Jen Mann pulls no punches. In this hilarious collection of essays, Jen Mann, nationally best-selling author of People I Want to Punch in the Throat, turns her mordant wit on the holidays. On Mann's naughty list: mothers who go way overboard with their Elf on the Shelf, overzealous carolers who can't take a hint, and people who write their Christmas cards in the third person ("Joyce is enjoying Bunko. Yeah, Joyce, we know you wrote this letter."). And on her nice list...well, she's working on that one. Here, no celebration is off-limits. The essays include: "You Can Keep Your Cookies, I'm Just Here for the Booze""Nice Halloween Costume. Was Skank Sold Out?""Why You Won't Be Invited to Our Chinese New Year Party"From hosting an ill-fated Chinese New Year party, to receiving horrible gifts from her husband on Mother's Day to reluctantly telling her son the truth about the Easter Bunny, Mann knows the challenge of navigating the holidays while keeping her sanity intact. And even if she can't get out of attending another Christmas cookie exchange, at least she can try again next year. Praise for Spending the Holidays with People I Want to Punch in the Throat:“Mann’s writing has transcended from witty anecdotes and complaints to notable satire. Hidden among the many laugh-out-loud zingers are lessons on how we relate to each other, and how ridiculous parenting culture has become.” (Associated Press)“Following the success of her first book, she is now punching throats at holidays, starting from her being age two and continuing to the present, where she is a harried mother bemoaning not just Christmas but all holidays.... Harried holiday haters will chuckle and perh ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jen Mann. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/rand/004350/bk_rand_004350_sample.mp3. Gulliver's Travels , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 129min
Part I : A Voyage to Lilliput and Blefuscu: Gulliver enjoys traveling, although it is this love of travel that is his downfall. His adventure sets off in Lilliput, when after a shipwreck, he wakes up, finding himself a prisoner of a race of people one 12th the size of normal human beings. However, his adventure among the small people does not last long, when he has to escape the city as he is charged with treason. Part II: A Voyage to Brobdingnag: This time around Gulliver finds himself in the land of the giants, and he is one twelfth their size. The people of Brobdingnag, find Gulliver amusing, as he is really small as compared to them, and exhibit Gulliver for money. However, Gulliver soon finds himself in the middle of the sea again, when a giant eagle seizes him and drops him right into the sea where he is picked up by some sailors. Part III: A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib, and Japan: After Gulliver's ship is attacked by pirates, he is marooned close to a desolate rocky island, near India. Fortunately he is rescued by the flying island of Laputa, a kingdom devoted to the arts of music and mathematics but unable to use them for practical ends. Gulliver is then taken to Balnibarbi to await a Dutch trader who can take him on to Japan. While waiting for passage, Gulliver takes a short sidetrip to the island of Glubbdubdrib, where he visits a magician's dwelling and discusses history with the ghosts of historical figures. When Gulliver finally returns home, he is determined to stay there for the rest of his days. Part IV: A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms: Despite his earlier intention of remaining at home, Gulliver returns to the sea as the captain of a merchantman. However, as expected he lands himself into trouble, and he comes first upon a race of (apparently) hideous deformed and savage humanoid creatures called Yahoos, who are ruled by a race of horses called Houyhnhms. Gulliver comes to both admire and ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rashid Raza. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/tmii/000003/bk_tmii_000003_sample.mp3.
