What are the origins of the idea of human rights and universal human dignity? How can we most fully understand and realize these rights going into the future? Internationally renowned sociologist and social theorist Hans Joas tells a story that differs from conventional narratives by tracing the concept of human rights back to the Judeo-Christian tradition or, alternately, to the secular French Enlightenment. Joas sets out a new path, proposing an affirmative genealogy in which human rights are the result of a process of "sacralization" of every human being. According to Joas, every single human being has increasingly been viewed as sacred. He discusses the abolition of torture and slavery, once common practice in the pre-18th century West, as two milestones in modern human history. Joas demonstrates that the history of human rights cannot adequately be described as a history of ideas or as legal history but as a complex transformation in which diverse cultural traditions had to be articulated, legally codified, and assimilated into practices of everyday life. The sacralization of the person and universal human rights will be secure in the future, warns Joas, only through continued support by institutions and society, vigorous discourse in their defense, and their incarnation in everyday life and practice. Binding the Ghost is both manifesto and example of a new variety of reading that centers a theological perspective in considering what literature actually does. Neither dogmatic nor apologetic, sectarian or denominational, this mode of reading acknowledges the inherently charged strangeness of writing and fiction, whereby authors have the ability to seemingly create entire universes from words alone.Ed Simon considers the theological depth, resonance, and mystery of the acts of reading and writing. His lyrical, incisive essays cover subjects such as the incarnational poetics of reading a physical book as opposed to reading online, the historical relationship between monotheism and the development of the alphabet, how the novel and Protestantism developed interiority within people, the occult significance of punctuation, and the functional similarities between poetry and prayer. Binding the Ghost presents a humane sacralization of reading and writing that takes into account the wonder, enchantment, and mystery of the very idea of poetry and fiction.

[Sacralization of the Self. Practices and traditions of subjectification] The Mainz Research Training Group "Ethnographies of the Self in the Present" examines the variety of current practices and traditions of subjectification and self-forming. Its starting point is the following observation: recent formations of the self are closely linked to the challenges of the digital age and the changing possibilities of acts of self-staging. This book compiles contributions from literary studies, theology, sociology and cultural anthropology. Based on printed sources and empirical material, it focuses on practices and traditions of the self in the present and forms of self-enhancement. Which ways and means of charging one's own biography with religious symbolism are observed? How are they discursively located? What are the cultural, ethical and aesthetic fields in which current "sacralizations of the self" are placed?
