Two Stories of Mouse Deer and Crocodile: An Indonesian Folktale, Hörbuch, Digital, 9min
Award-winning storyteller Bill Gordh (Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence winner, National Association of Parenting Periodicals Gold Award winner) presents this folk tale live with no script, accompanied only by his own dynamic banjo playing. Mouse Deer was down by the river one day when Crocodile swam up and chomped on little Mouse Deer's leg. Mouse Deer could not pull his leg from the clamped jaws of the crocodile. Mouse Deer did some quick thinking and began talking about how lucky he was that the crocodile had accidentally chomped on a stick instead of Mouse Deer's leg. Mouse Deer picked up a stick, which he extended from his body. Without thinking about it, Crocodile let go of Mouse Deer and chomped on the stick. Mouse Deer laughed and ran away. Another time Mouse Deer ran into Crocodile when Mouse Deer was crossing a dry riverbed. On the way across, he got tired and decided to climb onto a rock to take a nap. While he was sleeping, there was a big rainstorm up in the mountains. The rain filled the dry riverbed, and when Mouse Deer woke up he was surrounded by water. He looked around and saw Crocodile heading up the river, with many other crocodiles following. Crocodile smiled. He knew Mouse Deer could not swim. Mouse Deer thought quickly and asked Crocodile if he was going to eat Mouse Deer by himself or share him. Crocodile said he would share. How would he know who had a bite? Mouse Deer suggested that all the crocodiles line up side by side. Then he could step on them and announce what body part each would get to eat. Crocodile agreed. They lined up. Mouse Deer called out body parts as he quickly scampered across the crocodile bridge to safety. Language: English. Narrator: Bill Gordh. Soul Cage: Reiko Himekawa, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 614min
In this second installment of Japanese best-selling author Tetsuya Honda's much-loved Reiko Himekawa series, before worrying about finding the identity of the culprit in a murder case, police will first have to stretch their resources to discover the identity of the victim. A severed left hand is found in a minivan abandoned on a dry riverbed. When Tokyo Metropolitan Police Force lieutenant Reiko Himekawa and her team join the investigation, the hand is quickly identified as belonging to building contractor Ken'ichi Takaoka, and from the amount of blood spilled in the van, it is presumed that he was killed. However, searches fail to turn up the rest of the body, and the mystery deepens when a childhood friend shown a photo of the victim declares, "That's not Takaoka". The hand was actually cut from Kazutoshi Naito, who was believed to have killed himself 13 years before. What has Himekawa stumbled into? ungekürzt. Language: English. The Routes of Man: How Roads are Changing the World and the Way We Live Today , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 797min
Roads bind our world—metaphorically and literally—transforming landscapes and the lives of the people who inhabit them. Roads have unparalleled power to impact communities, unite worlds and sunder them, and reveal the hopes and fears of those who travel them. With his marvelous eye for detail and his contagious enthusiasm, Ted Conover explores six of these key byways worldwide. In Peru, he traces the journey of a load of rare mahogany over the Andes to its origin, an untracked part of the Amazon basin soon to be traversed by a new east-west route across South America. In East Africa, he visits truckers whose travels have been linked to the worldwide spread of AIDS. In the West Bank, he monitors highway checkpoints with Israeli soldiers and then passes through them with Palestinians, witnessing the injustices and danger borne by both sides. He shuffles down a frozen riverbed with teenagers escaping their Himalayan valley to see how a new road will affect the now-isolated Indian region of Ladakh. From the passenger seat of a new Hyundai piling up the miles, he describes the exuberant upsurge in car culture as highways proliferate across China. And from inside an ambulance, he offers an apocalyptic but precise vision of Lagos, Nigeria, where congestion and chaos on freeways signal the rise of the global megacity.A spirited, urgent book that reveals the costs and benefits of being connected—how, from ancient Rome to the present, roads have played a crucial role in human life, advancing civilization even as they set it back. ungekürzt. Inventing Niagara: Beauty, Power, and Lies , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 790min
Americans call Niagara Falls a natural wonder, but the falls aren't very natural anymore. In fact, they are a study in artifice. Water diverted, riverbed reshaped, brink stabilized, and landscape redesigned, the falls are more a monument to man's meddling than to nature's strength. Held up as an example of something real, they are hemmed in with fakery - waxworks, haunted houses, IMAX films, and ersatz Indian tales.A symbol of American manifest destiny, they are shared politely with Canada. Emblematic of nature's power, they are completely human-controlled. An archetype of natural beauty, the falls belie an ugly environmental legacy still bubbling up from below. On every level, Niagara Falls is a monument to how America falsifies nature, reshaping its contours and redirecting its force while claiming to submit to its will.Combining history, reportage, and personal narrative, Inventing Niagara traces Niagara's journey from sublime icon to engineering marvel to camp spectacle. Along the way, Ginger Strand uncovers the hidden history of America's waterfall: the Mohawk chief who wrested the falls from his adopted tribe, the revered town father who secretly assisted slave catchers, the wartime workers who unknowingly helped build the atomic bomb, and the building contractor who bought and sold a pharaoh. With an uncanny ability to zero in on the buried truth, Strand introduces us to underwater dams, freaks of nature, mythical maidens, and 280,000 radioactive mice buried at Niagara. From LaSalle to Lincoln to Los Alamos, Mohawks to Marilyn, Niagara's story is America's story, a tale of dreams founded on the mastery of nature. At a time of increasing environmental crisis, Inventing Niagara shows us how understanding the cultural history of nature might help us to rethink our place in it today. ungekürzt. Language: English.
